Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1519 comments Hello members,

This is the thread for our September 2024 nominations.

Fiction: Open Choice less than 200 pages for Shorty Sept
Non-Fiction: Art & Artists

Criteria:
1. Book must be by a female author (trans women and women using male pseudonyms are women).
2. No books that have already been group reads within the past 3 years/36 months (check the group's bookshelf).
3. Do not nominate a book you have written or for which you are the publicist or lead marketer.
4. Consider availability. If a book is available in the US and UK (at minimum), and in paperback and ebook formats, more members can participate than if not.

To Nominate:
1. Give both the title of the book and the author's name when nominating to avoid confusion. Please use the 'add book/author' button when nominating.
2. Indicate whether you are willing or not to lead discussion if your nomination is chosen.
3. Maximum - one nomination per member, per category.

Nominations will close in one week.

- Foster by Claire Keegan
- Fire on the Mountain by Anita Desai

I can lead.

Nike | 18 comments Hi, I'm quite new in this group and I don't believe I have nominated anything here before.

I'd love to nominate for Fiction: Fire on the Mountain by Anita Desai 174 pages

and for Nonfiction Art I nominate The Friday Night Club: A Novel of Artist Hilma af Klint and Her Creative Circle by Sofia Lundberg, Alyson Richman and M.J. Rose

I don't know whether I can lead or not, I'm living with chronic ailments and it's impossible for me to know beforehand.

Liesl | 677 comments For the Non-fiction read, I would like to nominate The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington by Joanna Moorhead.

Nike, thanks for your great noms! You've shared all we need to know for Anita and I to figure out how to support you if either nom wins and it turns out in the moment that leading is challenging. Thanks again for participating in the nomination process and engaging with us.

Hannah | 764 comments I'd like to nominate So Lucky by Nicola Griffith for short fiction 180 pages.

Similar to Nike, I'd like to lead but if my health issues flare back up I may need some support

Jen R. (rosetung) | 799 comments I'm liking alot of these nominations, but I'll throw this one in the mix as it's already on my bookshelf waiting to be read:

For nonfiction art: Handiwork by Irish artist and writer Sara Baume

Thank you for letting us know your needs for leading! Like Carol said, we will know to keep an eye on the thread if your nomination wins and offer support.

For your non-fiction nomination though, I’m seeing that this is a historical fiction novel, not a non-fiction, so it doesn’t qualify. You’re welcome to offer another nomination for this category if you’d like.

Susan | 207 comments For fiction, I nominate Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid. I can lead.

Jen R. (rosetung) | 799 comments Omg, could happily vote for any of these short fiction- can't decide!

By the way, the Great Women Artists podcast had interviewed Moorhead on Carrington a while back. I remember that being a very cool episode. She's apparently a journalist but also a long lost cousin of LC!

The Hilma af Klint idea also excited me! The Guggenheim show has stayed with me since I saw it years ago. Really moving artist's story and work. I'd love to get an artbook on her someday...

I went to an Leonora Carrington exhibition in Madrid about a year ago and she was an incredible woman who lived a very full life. They had a small film with interviews and she was absolutely delightful.

Oh cool! I wanna see film/interview footage of her! Seeing Carrington work in real life makes me reeally happy. I'm envious you've seen a dedicated exhibit!

IKR?

Another podcast for me to try - yay! Thanks for the rec. This is a topic where my interest is great and knowledge minimal.
