From the moment Summerset and Eve met each other, there was immediate friction. Did she start it or was it something he said or did?

Did he believe she was beneath Roarke, not a suitable companion or because she was a cop? Did she think he was snooty and wrote him off before he could do the same to her?

There relationship is much different now so factor that in as you build your case as to who struck first and who turned it around.

The first time they met, Summerset treated her like any other guest, stopping by to meet with Roarke despite some disdain for her leather coat. He pleasantly offered her a refreshment.

When Roarke walked in the parlor and requested "the forty-nine," "Summerset's eyes flickered with horror," Eve thought. "He left stiff-backed.  The forty-nine was the trigger.

Roarke had many relationships.  Was the forty-nine the trigger that Eve was someone special?   Probably, but it is more than that.  The book ends with Summerset being downright mean.

"Look pal I haven't been twisting Roarke's arm to get him to spend his valuable time with me. So why don't you pull the stick out of your ass and tell me why you act like I'm some sort of embarrassing rodent whenever I show up." " I'm am not comfortable with crude manners, Lieutenant Dallas. Obviously, you are" His jabs continue from there.

Suzanne Struthers (suzannestruthers) | 23 comments I always found it interesting that Summerset always accuses Eve of being rude when in the beginning (the first 6 books especially) his own behavior towards her was absolutely appalling. That said, I adore their relationship now, wherein their continuous sniping at each other is mostly done for either amusement or as a pressure release and he secretly does his best to take care of her. Summerset is a character I didn’t much care for in the beginning, but grew to love as time went on. Innocent and Delusion especially endeared him to me.
