When the Fairytale Crumbled by Madison Sheldon

Wonderful Readers,

Welcome to the 'When the Fairytale Crumbled' discussion group! (If you haven’t read the book yet, be warned **Spoilers inside!**)

I'm eager to hear your thoughts on the book, especially the ending. Do you agree with Emily/Lucy’s choices? Were you on Team Alejandro or Team Keith? Let’s discuss all the twists, turns, and thought-provoking themes together.

To get us started, here are a few questions:

1. What do you think about Emily/Lucy’s final choice? Was it the right one?
2. What did you think of Alejandro’s decision? Did he give up too easily?
3. Is Keith a villain, a hero, or simply human? Why?
4. Are there any scenes that touched your heart, or that you found particularly surprising or emotional?
5. Which character’s perspective did you find more compelling?

1. I honestly was on Team Alejandro because he never stopped looking for his amazing wife and Keith lied to her for 10 years, almost forcing her to think she was his wife.
2. I did think he gave up too easily. While Lucy was a changed person from the tramua and being with Keith for 10 years, he never gave her a chance to become his wife again as her 'new' Lucy.
3. I don't really know about Keith. I really disagree with his actions and he didn't even tell his daughter the truth, she had to find out for herself. He was also going to tell Lucy but never did, making her live a lie for 10 years. Though I could see he really started to love her, lying to someone for that long with as big of a lie as well, that just doesn't sit right with me. Plus even if he thought she didn't have a husband or kids, she would at least have parent's and a sibling waiting at home for her, never knowing what happened to their precious daughter.
4. I felt so emotional when Lucy finally saw her daughter again and was so happy to see her again after missing so much of her life.
5. I found it interesting to see Lucy's thought process as she learned the truth and started remembering her life from before. I think it was realistic thinking and not just a oh I guess this is how it is like other stories.
Extra: I would love to see Antonio get his own book. Lucy's brother needs a HEA just as much as Lucy deserves one.

1. At the beginning, I was 100% on Team Alejandro. I mean to have a man love you that much, and wait for you for over 10 years? Amazing! But then, as the characters spoke to me, and I immersed myself into the story I realized, in life not everything is black and white. Keith's actions are questionable of course, but the fact remains, that Lucy lived with him, as a loving wife and mother for the past 10 years. Love can withstand many things, but a separation that long? Do you think it’s realistic to expect Lucy falls back in love with Alejandro, when she is in love with Keith, and has lived with him for over a decade? Could she just turn off a switch and stop loving Keith?

2. I agree, maybe he could have put on a fight. However, when you truly love someone, you want the best for that person. I don't think Alejandro felt he was strong enough to deal with the "reality" of what Lucy went through. I think he loved her so much, that he realized he was being selfish by forcing her to “love him” when she clearly was in loved with Keith and had formed such a strong connection. If you recall, towards the end of the book, Alejandro almost broke down when Carlos taunted about what he did to Lucy. Later, when he saw that Lucy “came back” for Keith, he understood, that, they were a better match. If you loved someone as deeply as Alejandro loved Lucy, wouldn’t you step aside if you weren’t the best choice for him?

3. I agree. Keith is definitely a morally grey hero and was selfish. But aren’t we all at some point? To be fair, he was put in an impossible position as well, I think I will do anything for one of my kids. However, by the time Lily recovered, he had the chance to say something. But, at that point, he was in love with Lucy, and he deluded himself into thinking “she was better of” with him, living in blissful ignorance of her traumatic past. In his logic, if he said something, not only will their fairytale life will be destroyed, but Lucy will have to face her traumatic past. I think some of the worst decisions are made by good people, who find a way to “morally justify” their wrongdoing and convince themselves they are right. However, I think he did learn, and I liked that he tried to make amends with Lucy and Lucia. Are we all perfect people? Under very hard circumstances such as the ones Keith faced, would you act in a black and white manner, or turn a little grey?

4. I also loved the reunion between Lucy and Lucia. I cried so much while writing it. There is a special bond between mothers and daughters, that’s unlike everything else. No matter what happen or what will happen, your mom is your mom, and the connection will exist forever. I wanted to portray it as best as I could. I’m glad it resonated with you. Was Lucia believable to you? Or should she have acted more like a bratty teenager?

5. I’m glad you found Lucy’s recollections realistic. I dislike stories too far-fetched with instant resolutions. I tried to be a sensitive and realistic as possible while writing about her past, and the traumatic experiences she suffered. Also, I tried to reflect how it would be in real life for someone who is trying to recover her memories and reconnect with loved ones. I’m happy you liked the way I did it. Is Lucy strong for choosing the person she actually loved, or weak for forgiving Keith, despite the deception?

Extra: I’m so happy you want to see Antonio’s story. He’s a special brother and has a very emotional background story. But you’ll have to wait a bit. Next up its Alejandro’s HEA.
Would you have wanted to see Antonio punch Keith? I think I should have added that to the story, I know my brother would’ve done something like that.
