Donald | 13 comments A step by step explanation of how the economy operates.

It's written for the general reader and builds up from the simplest imaginable economy to explaining the dynamics behind environmental damage, deindustrialisation (rust-belts), precarious gig-economy jobs, and products that cause physical or psychological harm.

Illustrated and with and extensive bibliography, it's by an engineer (rather than an economist), and explodes some of the fallacies typically found in economics texts and in the simplistic economic solutions so often offered by politicians.

The book will appeal to anyone interested in economics or the environment. For those engaged in formal study in those areas at school or university, it offers an alternative analysis that will help you take a critical and independent view.

While the first and largest part of the book is the analysis and explanation, a second part discusses policy options, assuming you want to do something about the issues discussed, not just understand them. It will interest policy-makers and politicians wrestling with how to tackle the climate crisis and at the same time provide decent livelihoods.

Note: The book's title is a play on words as explained on the front cover. We live in a economic system that is driven by pushing people to want more and more stuff; at the same time it leaves many in the world 'in want', i.e. in poverty. To tackle the environmental crisis we will need people worldwide to be moderate, restrained or 'economical' in how much they want.

I have now published on Amazon an ebook version of my book An Economy of Want. The book has a lot of color diagrams so while viewable on a B&W Kindle, it's better on a color device.

I've also made a simple website about the book, in English and Spanish: https://sites.google.com/view/economy...

I'm hoping that the much lower price (I've put almost the minimum) and wider availability will allow it to reach a wider readership.

It comes with a new subtitle: How the economy works, and why it is damaging lives & trashing the planet.

I can see that the paperback is expensive (over twice the UK price); I don't know why.

For the Kindle edition, I see 162 rupees (about $1.95) on Amazon India for the e-book: https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0DBLJ2RX4 I hope that is affordable.

Donald | 13 comments I'm excited to be able to say that the e-book edition (Kindle) of my book An Economy of Want will be available FREE on certain dates. The next free dates are on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September 2024.

See the website http://economyofwant.uk for exact times, as these are PDT (Pacific Daylight Time).

The website also has more details about the book, shops that stock it, plus tasters in English and Spanish.

Donald | 13 comments The very slightly updated e-book edition of my book An Economy of Want is FREE today Weds 11th Dec for 24 hours from 00:00 PST (8am GMT).

I've been re-reading Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist and comparing it with my own book.

Of course I like Doughnut Economics - its heart is in the same place. The focus feels slightly different: more centered on the discipline of economics and on where we'd like/need to be. My attitude is more the typical engineer's ... "if this thing is not doing what we want then how does it work and why is it broken?" ... so more like a user's manual!

Perhaps the two approaches are complementary. I'd like to think so :-)
