This months Motif (theme) is...

"Story of Survival"

(Read a book where the character stays strong and survives something. )

What book did you pick? What did you think of it?

Indy_Chick | 89 comments Challenge complete! I read The Girl Who Was Taken by Charlie Donlea. It was a pretty good, suspenseful book. I thought I had the story figured out, but was surprised by the ending. I'm not a fan of back and forth between past and present with each chapter, but that seems to be popular now. There are a couple of women who "survive" in this story.

Jenny | 48 comments I read The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel. Historical fiction during WWII. The main character, a Jewish woman, survives the war and is an accomplished forger, which helps save hundreds of lives, mostly children. She documents their real names in a book that is lost after the Nazis stole it towards the end of the war.

Oh, that was a really good book! Great choice!

Patty Smith (pinkpurlandprose) | 49 comments I just finished Blindness by José Saramago. Let's hope this isn't what survival looks like.

I read Starling House by Alix E. Harrow. Opal survived a car accident, but unfortunately her mom drowned. The story itself is about her attraction to the old mansion, Starling House, that she often dreams about, as well as her trying to keep it together for her and her brother after her mom's death.

I read The World That We Knew by Alice Hoffman, which was all about surviving the war.

*SPOILERS*

I was THIS 🤏🏻 close to chucking this book across the room when Szeth lashed Dalinar into the sky. For real. I was all set to rage quit this series if Dalinar had died. Thankfully I didn’t have to do that, because I love this series with the heat of 1 million fiery suns. I want to continue reading right away, but I need to take a quick break to read another book that fits the word prompts of this month for the year long challenge I’m participating in. Hopefully I’ll get through it quickly with the incentive to continue reading Stormlight. One thing I would like to point out though - I KNEW Jasnah wasn’t dead! I even predicted to my bestie that she wasn’t, because her body had disappeared before Shallan sank (soulcast) the whole ship.

Deb Rouse | 20 comments I read Day One by Kelly DeVos, which is the second part of a duology...I read the first part, Day Zero earlier this year. It was the story of a bunch of teens who found themselves in the middle of apocalyptic situation. I thought it was pretty good, stretched reality a lot but power in youth themed. Oddly timely. This book wasn't as tightly written as first IMO, so holes appear.

Yankee Privateer by Andre Norton

Every so often Norton would step away from science fiction and dip her toe into historical drama. But while I prefer the former, she never disappoints when it comes to the latter.

Fitzhugh Lyon, the protagonist of the book, is a well-rounded character, a likable young man who you can’t help but be drawn into his story. I wasn’t sure I would be, but like The Opal-Eyed Fan, the story got better as you went along.

The same can be said of those who share his adventures. All have their faults, but they all are worthy companions, and add greatly to the book.

I think the book is supposed to be an YA, but I found it enjoyable enough, and deep enough, for an adult.

Yalonda (yalondade) | 81 comments CHALLENGE COMPLETE: The last few books in this series have been leading up to the final "will Ezra make it or?" moment. I won't spoil it but I had all the feels as the conclusion was reached.

Damned Souls and a Sangria (The Guild Codex Spellbound, #8) by Annette Marie

Cecil Huston | 241 comments Read another Longmire book, Hell Is Empty by Craig Johnson.
Always enjoy these books, this one had Walt chasing a fugitive across the mountains, alone of course. Pushing his luck, as always.
