Set in the small town of Bascom, North Carolina, this is a story of adult sisters Sydney and Claire. Claire has lived in Bascom her entire life. She runs a catering business using the edible flowers and herbs growing in her back yard. Sydney left as soon as she could, but has now returned with her young daughter, escaping an abusive relationship. Several of the townsfolk round out the character list, along with a love interest for each of the sisters. The Waverley family’s apple tree has magical properties. In addition, they possess a form of “sixth sense” where they “just know” what someone needs before being asked. This book boils down to a predictable romance. I enjoyed the parts about food, but the message seems to be that women should do everything in their power to please men. This type of imbalanced relationship dynamic never appeals to me and is one of the reasons I don’t care for romances. This is Sarah Addison Allen’s debut novel and part of a series, but I will not be reading further. I’m filing this under “not for me.”
