I would say in terms of checking it off your tbr, yeah it does because you actually get the information that the book is conveying.

I think yes because technically you do finish that book

I’m an 8th grade teacher who has to “police” my students reading through a reading log system and these are my thoughts
-audiobooks count because I really only care about can my students remember and apply narrative elements. If they’re gleaning themes, identifying conflicts, and actively listening, that’s reading to me!

Also just for fun
-graphic novels count as reading [some teachers don’t for some reason]
-novels in verse count as books
-fanfiction IS reading, they can count those!!!!

Does it count as a book, ya of course it does bc you have consumed the same words & story/info.

BUT. Personally I don’t think it counts as having “read” the book. I still mark it as read & count it towards my challenge, bc for me the challenge is about making it thru the books regardless of how. But I wouldn’t tell people that I’d “read that book,” I’d specify that I had “listened to that via audiobook.”

I kno people will eat me alive for this, but facts are facts. Not only are retention levels higher with actual READING vs Listening, but there’s a reason why people who never read books or never were able to read them are able to listen to them, & that’s bc it doesn’t take nearly as much of an attention span &/or focus. No shame in the game tho, audiobooks are amazing for that very reason, they bring literature & stories to people who ordinarily do not have the attention spans for them!!! But I also cannot ignore the obvious & say they are the same thing either when they’re clearly not.

I sometimes read audio books for school and my teacher counts it as reading. So yes

Audiobooks count as reading in my opinion. I can retain the same information as if I am reading it and can pronounce half the names better than if I am reading it. lol

I would say yes, but I have reader's guilt whenever I listen to audiobook, I have the urge to re-read the actual book after I finished with the audiobook because I feel like a cheat. Its tedious but this is probably a me issue.

As a meaning of getting the information and story then yes as it wouldn't matter if you use your eyes or ears as both can tranfer the story into your head, but as a meaning of literally reading then no as audiobooks are made to listen that's why it's called audio. But I would totally accept it when people listen to their books. I wouldn't say that they didn't read it, but I wish for them to be honest and tell me when they listened to it so that I know.

I count audio books as books read, but I personally prefer reading over listening because I'm not an audio person. I have trouble remembering the details when listening to an audio book, but that is a me thing, I guess.

I mean they aren't the exact same as reading but yes they should count as reading. You're listening to the exact same thing someone else is reading and retaining the same information. Don't know why snobs insist graphic novels) audiobooks/fanfics/anything not published novels isn't reading (Personally I can't stand listening to audiobooks though, for the sane reason I just can't listen to music with earphones)

imo saying audiobooks don't count as/towards reason completely takes out the demographic of people that can't go the words on paper route. in some sense, it can be ableist to say that and I'm saying this as someone who reads 97% physical books

I'm not a fan of audio books, and I personally don't think it classes as reading.
However, for people who are busy and still want to read it means they can still enjoy books when it is convenient for them.

Absolutely yes. I listen to many audiobooks while I am gardening or doing mindless yard work. If a book is excellent, I may listen to it twice. I prefer reading because it is much faster but I have too much work to be able to read as much as I would like.

Of course it does. People who say it doesn't only do so to put others down. It's the 'I'm better than you because' argument.

so true but I had one friend that tried to compete with me in physical books read and she was trying to say she read physical copies but later i found
out she just listened to them, it was a competition in physical books so audio books can be excuses.
