Happy results day!

Top:
A book whose title has ten or fewer letters
A book by an author with a common noun in their name

Bottom:
A book suggested to you by an AI model (ChatGPT and Co.) based on any prompt you give to it
A book with dungeons, donjons, or in high dudgeon
A book related to "The Great Gatsby"

Close Call:
A book that fits prompt no. 25 of a previous year's ATY challenge

The next round of suggestions will open around 11 am CDT on Saturday, July 13.

Tracy | 3264 comments Happy with these results — thanks Emily!

message 3: by Dixie (new)

Dixie (dixietenny) | 1374 comments I voted for both of those, excellent. Onward!

message 4: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 60 comments I voted for both of these too-quite pleased they won

message 5: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan J | 13 comments Excellent news! Two of my upvotes got in, one of my downvotes in the bottom. Pretty pleased with that.

message 6: by LeahS (last edited Jul 12, 2024 06:26AM) (new)

LeahS | 1432 comments They are ok, don't excite me at all. I voted against AI and dungeons, but for the Great Gatsby. I am sorry Gatsby was bottom, because it had so many possibilities as a prompt. I hope that the close call gets resubmitted. That was also one I liked.

message 7: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1236 comments The great thing about being positive and going with mostly upvotes is that things I vote for, get in.

I also downvoted AI and am happy I won't be seeing that prompt again.

These will be fun to search my TBR for, very happy with the results.

message 9: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments No disappointments for me, I voted for the two winners. I REALLY thought the "pursuit of happiness" would get in, too. That sort of prompt seems to be popular usually.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 713 comments Happy once again :)

Gosh I love this time of year! (well on Goodreads, not IRL cause I detest heat!). This is such fun to see what we come up with and what we vote for!

These two are good middle road picks- lots of choices but not "read any book."

message 12: by NancyJ (last edited Jul 12, 2024 07:32AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3735 comments These are easy enough. It will be fun to spot them, but I don’t have to search. I’m sure I’ll end up reading several books that fit without planning for them. Added- I just saw a note by Syblle regarding Nathan Hill, so unless I read it sooner, I’ve got that prompt covered already.

I hope the close call gets in later.

I prefer to search for topics or concepts rather than letters, but we need a good mix to keep it interesting for every one.

I’m disappointed that the Science Gone Wrong idea didn’t get in. It’s the most interesting idea we’ve had on a long time. I hope it will be suggested again, later this summer. I’ll keep it in mind as I look for other books.

I really like the Pursuit of Happiness concept too. I like that you could use it for something serious or fun, edgy or sentimental, historical or contemporary. How often does that happen?

I’m sorry I submitted east-west connections so early, without listing any examples. The suggestions round was going so slowly I felt the need to add something different. I’ll resubmit it in September. If anyone has book examples can you let me know?

message 13: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments I forgot today was results. Both of the tops were in my top votes, so I’m happy with the results.

I liked the East-West prompt. I think sometimes in trying to broaden a topic to make it appealing to people, it makes the whole thing confusing- the description of the prompt was quite confusing. Maybe start a listopia for people to get inspo from and just do the first part of the description.

Book ideas:
For All the Tea in China: Espionage, Empire and the Secret Formula for the World's Favourite Drink
Asia in the Making of Europe, Volume I: The Century of Discovery. Book 1.
The Joy Luck Club
Crazy Rich Asians
The Painted Veil
The Quiet American

Colonialism list: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

With the Sci-fi and fantasy prompt getting in last round, I think the science gone wrong was suggested too soon to make it.

The East/West was my other up vote. I have no clue what I’d read for it so I’m no help with examples, but I like the prompt.

message 16: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 713 comments Babel would work for the east/west prompt.

message 17: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 3264 comments I like the East/West prompt as well. Maybe some other ways to go with it:
1) a book set in Turkey as it is part of Asia (East) AND part of Europe (West).
2) a book involving gangs, as they are territorial. In my town there seems to be a rivalry between the “East Side” and the “West Side” (luckily not a very active rivalry).
3) a book involving swing dance, since two of the styles are East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing. I don’t know of any books involving swing dance, but I’m assuming they might be out there.
4) a book involving the Berlin Wall (East Berlin and West Berlin).

message 18: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 713 comments These would fit the east/west prompt. I enjoyed both.

Babel
The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11276 comments Mod
The close call was SOOOOOOO close. Like... one upvote would have made the difference. So I hope it will get resubmitted in a later round.

message 20: by Sibylle (last edited Jul 12, 2024 08:07AM) (new)

Sibylle | 154 comments East/West: Authors living in the west, born in the east/with eastern/asian heritage? - Would that work?

Salman Rushdie, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ken Liu, R.F. Kuang, Abbas Khider and lots of others

message 21: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3867 comments I’m happy with these 2 results but was most interested in the East/West connection. The obvious book for me, that I’ve been meaning to read, is Shōgun but there are so many other options. I think it would be a fun one to research and to see what’s on my shelves. I hope it gets resubmitted!

For noun in the author’s name, I might go with Octavia Butler, Louise Penny or Barbara Kingsolver. That’s an easy one to fill from my shelves!

message 22: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 201 comments Yay! This is the first time one of my suggestions won!

message 23: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 587 comments I downvoted all three of the bottom picks. Upvoted one of the two that made it.

I hope the close call is resubmitted.

message 24: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 3264 comments Congrats Sandra!

message 25: by Nike (new)

Nike | 1731 comments I like those! I hoped Negations would be voted for also but maybe that one will get another chance later on.

message 26: by Trish, Annular Mod (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1248 comments Mod
I downvoted two out of three of the bottom ones (not the dungeon one), and upvoted at least one of the top ones, so I'm happy.

message 28: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments I’m hoping some of the ones that didn’t make it get through get resuggested in future polls.

I upvoted 5 prompts and 1 of them got through. I would’ve preferred more of them had been successful however I’m pleased we got 2 from this poll.

I’m interested to see what gets nominated tomorrow.

I liked Babel too, and I want to read the Reluctant Fundamentalist.

I created an “East meets west” shelf and I have 89 books so far! They’re both on it now.

Joy D | 727 comments NancyJ wrote: "I created an “East meets west” shelf and I have 89 books so far! .."

message 31: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth1234561) | 224 comments 2 of my upvotes got bottomed and 1 of my upvotes made it. So pretty good! I really liked the AI prompt but I expected it to get down voted. I also upvoted the dungeon prompt which I also kind of expected to get bottomed. Hopefully some of the others get resubmitted because I enjoyed so many of these in this round!

message 32: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments Happy with these. Would have perhaps liked one more, but 2025 looks like being off to a great list!

message 33: by Jess (new)

Jess Reads | 11 comments I am happy with the results. I do hope the close call gets another chance! Thank goodness the AI prompt was bottom.

I was looking forward to a Gatsby prompt

message 34: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1067 comments I love the idea of that close call prompt, but I down voted it and would again because I don't like any of the actual 25th prompts.

message 35: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments In my search for common noun names in my TBR, I'm a bit surprised to find so many birds! Kingfisher, Willett (I'm counting this one despite the extra T), Robin ... and I've only just started!

message 36: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I voted for those but I thought we would have had more winners.

Were the results really scattered between the other ones?

Was just wondering if everyone was more split between the other prompts and if they were by themselves if they would be clear winners, if that makes sense.

Dubhease | 1236 comments Marie wrote: "I love the idea of that close call prompt, but I down voted it and would again because I don't like any of the actual 25th prompts."

I'm wondering if the 10th prompt would work better.

message 38: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments I didn’t vote for the 25th prompt because I like the idea of picking from the 2016 list better.

message 39: by Dixie (new)

Dixie (dixietenny) | 1374 comments Jillian wrote: "I didn’t vote for the 25th prompt because I like the idea of picking from the 2016 list better."

I prefer picking from the 2016 list, too.

message 40: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments I'm pretty indifferent about the 10 or fewer letters, but I did vote for the other winner so I'm happy about that. It wasn't my top choice (that would be science gone wrong or pursuit of happiness), but it still seems like a fun one.

message 41: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1342 comments LeahS wrote: "They are ok, don't excite me at all. I voted against AI and dungeons, but for the Great Gatsby. I am sorry Gatsby was bottom, because it had so many possibilities as a prompt. I hope that the close..."
I downvoted Great Gatsby as I didn't see any possibilities that interested me. maybe it wasn't discussed enough.

I'm happy with the winners, I voted for both of them.

I would have voted for the close call if I had another vote. It was in and out many times over my decision making.

message 42: by Sibylle (new)

Sibylle | 154 comments I think all close calls should be put up again in the last round of voting.

message 43: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11276 comments Mod
In the past, we’ve done a poll that only had Close Call prompts. Last year, however, most of the Close Calls eventually made it in, so we didn’t have a need for a poll for them.

Sibylle | 154 comments Emily wrote: "In the past, we’ve done a poll that only had Close Call prompts. Last year, however, most of the Close Calls eventually made it in, so we didn’t have a need for a poll for them."

That makes sense, thank you!

message 45: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 693 comments I wish "ten" in the title or author had made it in.

I was actually thinking of submitting a prompt of an author's name that is (was) an occupation, so that noun prompt works for that! I think I'll try to stick with occupation to fill it, but probably something else will come along that fits!

message 46: by Bea (new)

Bea | 431 comments I am happy with the results. I did 6 up votes and 2 down votes, and both of my down votes got shot down. Yay! And, both up votes were in my voting also.

However, I did not understand the East-West prompt suggestion, but felt that it was better than any of the others so it got an up vote. Now that several of you are noting possible books, I am even more excited about it. Yep...bring it back!

message 47: by Conny (new)

Conny | 656 comments Wow, what's with all the hate for the AI prompt? I thought that was super fun, creative, on top of the times, and would definitely have turned up something for everyone :o I went and tried in straight away, and it did return a book on my TBR, so I guess Rejects Challenge it is :D

message 48: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 1432 comments Conny wrote: "Wow, what's with all the hate for the AI prompt? I thought that was super fun, creative, on top of the times,..."

Not so much that people wouldn't be able to find books, but that people were objecting to the fact that ChatGPT etc. pose a threat to writers, translators and other creative people.

What app did you use? I'm a bit curious, would like to try it out.
