I've just read my first by her, Circlet of Oak Leaves, a 77 page shortie by Beaver (illustrated by Victor G. Ambrus), and was completely bowled over! What a writer! :D It was terrific on the historical fiction side of things (expected), but what I didn't expect was the depth - it was all about the human character, bravery, pride, suffering..!

I'm completely impressed. The book mentioned another one published by Beaver, Eagle's Egg, which I'll have to (eventually) track down.

(While taking a look for it on bookfinder.com, I discovered that bookfinder.com has been bought out by Amazon, and now I'm just mad). :p

Rosemary Sutcliff was a wonderful author. While have I always felt that The Eagle of the Ninth was too much of a boys' adventure yarn, books such as The Lantern Bearers, Dawn Wind, Song for a Dark Queen, Knight's Fee, and so many others are a pleasure to read and admire.

Knight's Fee by Rosemary Sutcliff as a lovely standalone.

Kirsten Edwards (craftykje) | 14 comments Rosemary Sutcliffe is wonderful. The Witch's Brat is a great book. Set in medieval times. I love the depth of her characters.

@Clare - thank you! I actually got a copy in the same haul! Some kind soul donated a treasure trove of Sutcliff! I'll raise this up on the priority list, thank you!
@Kirsten - will make sure I have The Witch's Brat on my to-read list! Thanks!

Louise Culmer | 88 comments When I was eight we were read two of her early books by a teacher ‘The Armourer’s House’, set in London during the reign of Henry VIII, and ‘Brother Dusty-Feet’ about a company of strolling payers in Elizabethan England. I also read ‘The Queen Elizabeth Story’ another story with an Elizabethan setting, and with a touch of magic (Perdita, the heroine, can see fairies because she was born on Midsummer Eve). I loved all those three, but when I tried to read some of her later books like The Eagle of the Ninth I couldn’t get on with them.

They are lovely stories, more what I would call family stories than adventure stories, all with beautiful illustrations by C. Walter Hodges. I’ve uploaded a few illustrations to the photos.
