Carson McCullers's classic debut novel set in the South in the 1930s. The novel covers themes of loneliness and isolation amidst economic and racial tensions. The heart of the book is Mr. Singer, a deaf mute, who unwittingly fills a therapeutic need for the other four main characters, who interpret his engagement to fit their need. 4.5 stars rounded up.
