LIGHTHOUSES: BEACONS IN THE DARK
DURATION: 3 months from start

Lighthouses are beacons guiding ships safely into harbor at night or during a storm. Located on rocky coasts, towering cliffs, and on islands, lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, and rocks and assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined with the use of cheaper, more effective electronic navigational systems. Many are now architectural landmarks drawing tourist with their scenic beauty and historic significance. The theme for this challenge is scenic lighthouses in the United States.

BLOCK ISLAND, RHODE ISLAND
The Victorian style light keeper's building is an architecturally distinctive gem sitting atop Mohegan Bluffs. Block Island Southeast Lighthouse offers amazing views out over the Atlantic. The lighthouse was built in 1875 but moved inland 300 feet in 1993 due to erosion.
🛳️Read a book set in the Victorian era (1837-1901) OR a book with a character who moves, is new to town or returns home.

CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE, NORTH CAROLINA
Located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, this lighthouse was first built in 1802. The current 210 feet high lighthouse was built in 1950 and is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. It is still active today.
🛳️Read a book with a lighthouse on its cover OR by an author whose first or last name begins with C or H.

BODIE ISLAND, NORTH CAROLINA
Tucked away between tall pine trees and freshwater marshland, the Bodie Island Light (pronounced "body") is the third constructed on that site. The first was constructed on a poor foundation and began to lean within two years; the second was a casualty of the Civil War, blown apart by retreating Confederate soldiers.
🛳️ Read a book where something is blown up or destroyed OR with either a body on the cover or the word 'body' in the title OR the third book in a series.

CAPE FLORIDA LIGHTHOUSE, FLORIDA
This lighthouse at Key Biscayne, FL was built in 1825 to guide ships away from the Florida Reef. It now sits as a landmark within one of Florida's state parks.
🛳️Read a book where a character goes to a park OR a book with a word in its title that rhymes with KEY. (Including 'Mystery"; Not including "The") .

BILOXI LIGHTHOUSE, MISSISSIPPI
This cast iron tower is adjacent to the Mississippi Sound on the Gulf Coast. This lighthouse has been maintained by female light keepers. The building, damaged by Hurricane Katrina, has become a symbol of the city's resolve and resilience.
🛳️Read a book set in a US Gulf Coast state (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or Florida) OR where the MC is a female business owner or manager/supervisor.

NEW LONDON LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE, CONNECTICUT
Connecticut's square-shaped New London Ledge Lighthouse is a three-story, 11-room brick and granite building designed in the Second Empire style so that it would match the architecture of the homes of two local wealthy men. According to local lore, the lighthouse is haunted by the ghost of a man named Ernie, an early keeper who perished while tending to the light.
🛳️Read a book with a ghost or other supernatural character OR with a house on the cover.

CAPE NEDDICK (NUBBLE) LIGHTHOUSE, MAINE
Cape Neddick Light was built in 1879 on a tiny off-shore island, known as a 'nubble'. It draws tourists to its celebrated holiday lights during both Christmas and Christmas in July celebrations.
🛳️Read a book set during the Christmas holiday season OR a book with double consonants in the title or author's name OR set on an island.

PORTLAND HEAD LIGHTHOUSE, MAINE
Maine's oldest lighthouse was built on Cape Elizabeth, a location that had been used as a lookout during the American Revolution. In 1791, the lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington; the contract of construction for the keeper's quarters was signed by John Hancock.
🛳️Read a book with 'historical fiction' or 'historical mystery' on its main GR page OR a book with a character named Elizabeth (including nicknames such as Liz, Betty, Libby or Beth).

SPLIT ROCK LIGHTHOUSE, MINNESOTA
This lighthouse in Minnesota was constructed in 1910 after a number of shipwrecks nearby on Lake Superior. Perched high on a rocky cliff, it made a cameo appearance in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby.
🛳️ Read a book set in a state that borders one of the Great Lakes (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin) OR where MC attends a movie, play, concert or other performance.

WHITE SHOAL LIGHT, MICHIGAN
There are more lighthouses in Michigan than in any other state. Built in 1912, the White Shoal Light on the Great Lakes is a distinctive red and white spiral candy cane striped tower. It marks a hazardous area in Lake Michigan and is located 20 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge.
🛳️Read a book with a color name in the title OR a book with a striped object on the cover OR a book with candy on the cover.

HECETA HEAD, OREGON
Oregon's Heceta Head Lighthouse is reminiscent of a coastal Mediterranean setting. Considered to be one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world, this Oregon treasure was built in 1893 and is set on a 1,000-foot-high cliff. You can spend the night in the old keeper's cottage which now operates as a bed & breakfast.
🛳️Read a book set in a B&B or hotel OR where a key character stays in a B&B or hotel OR MC is in the hospitality business (ex: caterer, event planner).

PIGEON POINT LIGHTHOUSE, CALIFORNIA
Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, you can find this tower near San Francisco Bay. The 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in America, has been guiding mariners since 1872. The renovated lightkeeper's house has served as a youth hostel since the mid-1960s.
🛳️Read a book with a bird name in its title OR a bird on the cover OR a book with a character who is a youth (teenager or child).

Progress 12/12

The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner by Grace Tame

CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE, NORTH CAROLINA
Located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, this lighthouse was first built in 1802. The current 210 feet high lighthouse was built in 1950 and is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. It is still active today.
🛳️Read a book with a lighthouse on its cover OR by an author whose first or last name begins with C or H.
The Shape of Water (Inspector Montalbano, #1) by Andrea Camilleri

BODIE ISLAND, NORTH CAROLINA
Tucked away between tall pine trees and freshwater marshland, the Bodie Island Light (pronounced "body") is the third constructed on that site. The first was constructed on a poor foundation and began to lean within two years; the second was a casualty of the Civil War, blown apart by retreating Confederate soldiers.
🛳️ Read a book where something is blown up or destroyed OR with either a body on the cover or the word 'body' in the title OR the third book in a series.
A Trail Through Time (The Chronicles of St Mary's, #4) by Jodi Taylor where the headquarters, St Mary’s is attacked, and things are always getting blown up.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Dirk Gently, #1) by Douglas Adams has two rhymes, Gently and agency.

The Alpine Yeoman (Emma Lord, #25) by Mary Daheim

NEW LONDON LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE, CONNECTICUT
Connecticut's square-shaped New London Ledge Lighthouse is a three-story, 11-room brick and granite building designed in the Second Empire style so that it would match the architecture of the homes of two local wealthy men. According to local lore, the lighthouse is haunted by the ghost of a man named Ernie, an early keeper who perished while tending to the light.
🛳️Read a book with a ghost or other supernatural character OR with a house on the cover.
The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady by Debbie De Louise

CAPE NEDDICK (NUBBLE) LIGHTHOUSE, MAINE
Cape Neddick Light was built in 1879 on a tiny off-shore island, known as a 'nubble'. It draws tourists to its celebrated holiday lights during both Christmas and Christmas in July celebrations.
🛳️Read a book set during the Christmas holiday season OR a book with double consonants in the title or author's name OR set on an island.
Aunt Bessie Understands (Isle of Man, #21) by Diana Xarissa

PORTLAND HEAD LIGHTHOUSE, MAINE
Maine's oldest lighthouse was built on Cape Elizabeth, a location that had been used as a lookout during the American Revolution. In 1791, the lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington; the contract of construction for the keeper's quarters was signed by John Hancock.
🛳️Read a book with 'historical fiction' or 'historical mystery' on its main GR page OR a book with a character named Elizabeth (including nicknames such as Liz, Betty, Libby or Beth).
A Man of Some Repute (A Very English Mystery, #1) by Elizabeth Edmondson

A Murder Mystery Cruise (A Rachel Prince Mystery, #8) by Dawn Brookes

WHITE SHOAL LIGHT, MICHIGAN
There are more lighthouses in Michigan than in any other state. Built in 1912, the White Shoal Light on the Great Lakes is a distinctive red and white spiral candy cane striped tower. It marks a hazardous area in Lake Michigan and is located 20 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge.
🛳️Read a book with a color name in the title OR a book with a striped object on the cover OR a book with candy on the cover.
Dark Clouds Over Nuala (The Inspector de Silva Mysteries #2) by Harriet Steel the whole cover design is in stripes.

Aunt Bessie Tries (Isle of Man Cozy, #20) by Diana Xarissa The potential victim goes to stay in a hotel to protect herself.

The Angry Women's Choir by Meg Bignell where the MC’s teenage children play a significant role.

🛳️Read a book with a bird name in its title OR a bird on the cover OR a book with a character who is a youth (teenager or child).

woohoo! Glad I'm not the last one. My reading time has been limited lately. My boss gave me some cozies for Christmas so I have two new series to start and complete more challenges.
