Helen 2.0 Starting this weekend (7/20/24)

Quinty (Taylor's Version) Hi I'm so excited!! This has been on my tbr for way too long. I just need to finish my current read and then I'm set to go!

Quinty (Taylor's Version) Okay so I didn't fully manage to finish my book today but I should be able to do so tomorrow and still start Beach Read if you wanted to start tomorrow (so Saturday). Should we make a schedule or would you prefer reading at our own paces?

Helen 2.0 Reading at our own pace worked out for the last one so I'm happy to do that this time too!

I actually got bored and started last night but I'm only a few chapters in and will probably be reading kinda slow so no rush for you to start.

Quinty (Taylor's Version) Oh perfect I was also planning on starting soon! My summer vacation actually just started so now I'm really motivated to read a lot haha, so I might go through it quite quickly

Quinty (Taylor's Version) Okay I've started and I'm already at chapter 11. So far I'm liking it, there was a moment where I got goosebumps (idk where you are so I don't want to spoil it) but then that line of thought didn't go anywhere and instead the scene went in a completely different direction. Which makes sense for the book but also kinda disappointed me lol. It feels like kind of a slow start, I'm a third of the way in and it only feels like the book is starting now

Quinty (Taylor's Version) Ok I'm really going fast (already up to chapter 22, will probably finish today) and this book is so close to being a 5 star but every time a scene almost makes me cry it stops. Idk it feels like there's one tiny thing missing

This is about where I'm at currently, I'm curious what moment you mean?

I'm liking it so far, more than I thought given my usual opinions on contemporary romance haha. Both leads are a little bit boring as people but they come across as genuine and just two people trying to get by as best they can.

I like their banter and I think they have decent chemistry. Emily Henry is a witty writer so I'm enjoying that too.

My only gripe so far is that January seems really oblivious to the romcom tropes her life is following given that she IS a romcom writer. Shouldn't she be expecting her college rival to be her new neighbor and to turn out to have loved her all along? Has she no genre literacy?? LOL

Helen 2.0 Sorry I haven't been super active, it's been an odd time for me lately, I've been pretty distracted. Hoping to read more today and get at least halfway through the book.

Uhmm I remember it was them in the car and they talked about something emotional but I don't remember what it was exactly? lol. I've read the book in 3 days which means I now only remember vague thigns about it haha. But this didn't truly feel like any romcom to me, it felt a lot more emotional for some reason? So that might be why you're liking it more, has a bit more depth to it.

I really love their chemistry too.

Yeah January seems oblivious, but that might just have be to make the book work lol. I mean they literally made a promise to not fall in love, every romcom book that has that means they fall in love lol. I guess that didn't really bother me

Don't worry!! I've just happened to have a boat load of time this weekend and this book really made me want to continue reading, which is how I finished it so fast. I thought it was a really quick read, and I did really enjoy it. It's standing on the cliff of a 5 star for me, but it just didn't make that last jump to actually become a 5 star. I don't really know how to explain it, usually my 5 stars leave me sobbing lol and this one was really close to making me cry a lot but just never pulled through, idk

Helen 2.0 So I'm about three quarters through, and I still enjoy it. It's not a five star read for me either, but I do really like Gus. He's sweet and his character arc just works.

I also like that the conflict originally arose from just a personality mismatch but neither one of them is actually a rude or dumb person. People act reasonably and when there's a misunderstanding it's resolved quickly. That's been refreshing.

Planning to finish today.

Quinty (Taylor's Version) Yes I completley agree! It's a nice read and there aren't really any miscommunications (except near the end but that's fixed quickly)
