This book is a follow-up to the author’s well-received Brooklyn. It starts at the home of Eilis Lacey Fiorello, her husband Tony, and children Rosella and Larry. They live in a neighborhood in Long Island surrounded by Tony’s large family. As the novel opens, a man knocks on the door with the news that his wife is pregnant with Tony’s child. The storyline centers on Eilis’s reaction to this news. It opens in New York, but a good portion takes place in Ireland in her former hometown, where she visits for her mother’s eightieth birthday. A man Eilish loved years ago, Jim Farrow, is now (unbeknownst to her) engaged to her best friend. I easily became engrossed in this story from the outset. The writing is stellar. It is character driven and it is easy to picture these people – they seem very real. The book ends just when we want to know what will happen next so I expect a third book will be forthcoming. Though it may not be necessary to read Brooklyn first, I think it would be helpful.
