This year during the fall semester, Military and Veteran Services at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) will be honoring the 80th anniversary of the GI Bill® through the passage of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944.
During World War II, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 [Pub.L. 78-346, 58 Stat. 284] signed into law a series of entitlements for servicemembers transitioning back into civilian society, to be administered through the Veteran Administration [now known as the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA)]. Such benefits consisted of funding for education, healthcare services, employment assistance, and housing, property and business loans. These VA benefits greatly reshaped the lives of veterans and American society, giving rise to the Greatest Generation: transforming the middle class that permanently reshaped neighborhoods and communities, and expanded universities, colleges, and vocational training across the nation.
To learn about this history, the month of October, SIUE's Military and Veteran Service will be reading The GI Bill: A New Deal for Veterans by Glenn C. Altshuler and Stuart M. Blumin (Oxford University Press, 2009).
