When I saw the tag “book boyfriends” I immediately thought of Pride and Prejudice and its retellings. I first read this loose retelling more than 20 years ago. and I absolutely loved it. I still love the character but with the affection of a very old friend that I only see during the holidays. She is always a little drunk but she’s loads of fun. The book is different from the movie in many small ways. The book is closer to the classic P&P, with a story involving Darcy saving a flighty relative from ruin. (Her mother rather than Lydia) .The movie is probably more romantic.. The book includes references to gossip rag stories about both Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. This was fun to hear because both actors were later cast in major roles in the hit movie. I gave the book 5 stars the first time I read it, but if I read it for the first time today, it would get 3.5 stars on audio, and 4 stars in print. Im keeping the 5 stars as my official rating. The diary format is annoying on audio, because she starts each entry with comments on her weight, and alcohol and cigarette consumption, and it would be easier to skim in print. The angst is hard to take now. I still love the character. She has a special place in my heart.

I loved this on audio even with the diary entries. The sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is actually a retelling of Persuasion, though it's not as obvious.

Bridget is also a big fan of the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries. I think it is. I went to a lecture once on vacation where the guest professor argued that every modern romance is inspired by Pride and Prejudice, particularly those with a haughty man and a woman who challenges him rather than flatter him.
