I read this one too and gave it 3 stars. I didn't write a review since I had nothing to say about it - seemed very bland. I also read Whale Fall which I much preferred (and hope it is nominated for the Booker Prize).

This is the second short book I read in the last few weeks that takes place on a remote island and features the conflict between residents and outlanders who think they know what's best. In the mid-19th century, John goes to an island inhabited by only one person, Ivar. His job is to explain that Ivar must leave since the proprietors of the island have other plans. But right after his arrival, John is injured and he and Ivar find themselves connected. This was very well done on audio, including lots of bizarre Scots or island words.
(view spoiler)[ The story has a definite connection to the Garden of Eden, 2 people alone in the world, learning the names of things. Later they learn knowledge about each other that could lead to tragedy. It's a very short book but took several turns that surprised me. (hide spoiler)]
