Il promontorio roccioso di Panebianco, al confine tra il comune di Giolinto e quello di Tarenne, sulla costa tirrenica meridionale d'Italia, è unito al continente da un istmo stretto, alto e a strapiombo sul mare. Resti di una fortificazione medievale, una manciata di casette per la maggior parte disabitate e un antico forno in pietra fanno del piccolo borgo di Panebianco un mondo a sé in cui Elisabetta e Bianca crescono condividendo giochi, interessi e passioni.
Il corso dell'esistenza umana è determinato da fattori oggettivi, soggettivi, ma anche da forze oscure insite nel carattere delle persone che a volte assumono comportamenti atti a destabilizzare, ad annientare e a soggiogare le volontà e i desideri altrui. Come la roccia è esposta alle forze portentose degli elementi cosí l'esistenza umana lo è alle forze oscure.

William Walton è lo pseudonimo dell'autore. Panebianco è il suo terzo romanzo dopo Alis Jenkins e A Blind Alley.
