description

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from August 1st 2024 to August 31st 2024. Results will be announced on September 1st 2024.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by completing a line with the capitals.

You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺

How it works:

To earn points in this challenge, simply read and review as normal, but if you would like to help your team earn some bonus points, then the idea behind this challenge is to read books that fit the tasks for a capital.

Did you know that the world has 195 countries and each of them has a capital? Pack your books and travel! We won’t visit all the capitals, though, just a selection.
Traveling doesn’t need to cost a lot of money: just choose a book that fits a task and get ready for lift off!

But…yes, there’s a but: you will get a line of capitals.

Here are the lines:
1. Brussels (Belgium) – Paris (France) – London (UK) – Amsterdam (The Netherlands)
- I live in Belgium and like waffles: Read a book with waffles on the cover.
- There are great French authors: Read a book that is translated from a French author.
- London has an interesting history: Read a book with London history as a theme.
- Amsterdam has a lot of ditches: Read a book with the letters D, I, T, C and H' in the title/series name/author name.
2. Edinburgh (Scotland)- Dublin (Ireland) – Oslo (Norway) – Stockholm (Sweden)
- Edinburgh is famous for its many castles: Read a book with CASTLE in the title/series.
- Dublin has some interesting Irish authors: Read a book from a Dublin author.
- In Oslo there’s a famous art museum: Read book with a painting on the cover.
- Stockholm lies on 14 islands between Lake Mälar and the Baltic Sea: read a book where the main character is stranded on an island.
3. Helsinki (Finland)– Madrid (Spain)– Rome (Italy) – Warsaw (Poland)
- Helsinki has an old market hall: read a book where something is sold on a market.
- If you want to have a good time partying, Madrid is the place to be: read a book where the main character is rejected for a party.
- Did you know that Rome is famous for its more than 300.000 stray cats and that there’s a law that they can’t be disturbed at the place where they were born? The cats are protected: read a book where a cat plays an important role in it.
- The symbol of Warsaw is a mermaid: read a YA – book about mermaids.
4. Wellington (New Zealand) – Canberra (Australia)– Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea)– Jakarta (Indonesia)
- Wellington was where LOTR came to life: read a book written by Tolkien.
- Canberra: the National Dinosaur Museum has the largest permanent display of dinosaur fossils: read a book where the MC is a paleontologist.
- In Port Moresby there’s the national botanic garden: read a book where there are flowers mentioned in the text.
- Jakarta is drowning due to climate change and the capital will be replaced by another capital on the island of Borneo: read a YA – book with MPG Dystopian or Climate Change.
5. Tokyo (Japan) – New Delhi (India) – Beijing (China) – UlaanBaatar (Mongolia)
- Tokyo has lots of temples: read a book where the MC makes a sacrifice in a temple.
- New Delhi is known because of its many smells and use of lots of bright colors: read a book where the smell or sight plays an important role.
- Beijing has the best preserved emperial city of the world: read a book with the word EMPEROR in the title or series.
- Ulaanbaatar is the most important node of the Trans – Mongolian rail line: read a book where the main character travels by train.
6. Caïro (Egypte) – Nayrobi (Kenya) – Dakar (Senegal) – Antananarivo (Madagscar)
- Caïro played an important role during the period of the pharaohs. Read a book where the main character is a pharaoh.
- Nayrobi is the safari capital of Africa. Read a book that has the letters of SAFARI in the title/author/series.
- Dakar was famous for its auto rally: read a book where a car race takes place.
- Antananarivo is famous for its unique fauna and flora: read a book with one of its ‘strange’ animals on the cover: lemures, gekkos, cameleons.
7. Bogota (Colombia) – San Jose (Costa Rica) – Havana (Cuba) – San Salvador (El Salvador).
- In Bogota you find the most graffiti and the most beautiful graffiti of the world: read a book with all the letters of GRAFFITI in the title/ author/series.
- San Jose is called the Capital of Silicon Valley: read a book where an author writes about computer. (theme, main character…)
- Havana is known for it’s alcoholic drinks: read a book where the MC gets drunk.
- El Salvador has a lot of active volcanos: read a book with VOLCANO in the title.

What you need to do:
- For this challenge you can read every book that you want, solo or as a team. But to earn extra points, this challenge contains tasks that you can complete to travel from capital to capital.
- Complete a line by reading for the 4 tasks in each line.
- You can choose which line to start with and you can work on the lines in any order.
- When you complete that line, you get 10 bonus points for completing.
- When completing all the lines, you get an addition of 20 bonus points.
- Once all lines are completed, the team can start again.

You can read more than 1 book for a task.
F.e. If 3 members reads 3 books for Brussels, 1 member for Paris, 2 for London and 1 for Amsterdam, then the scoring would be:

___________________________________________
| Brussels | Paris_ | London | Amsterdam_ |
| Belgium_ | France | England| Netherlands|
| ___03___ | __01__ | __02__ | ____01____ |

=7 books read; 1 line completed = 10 points.

If there is another book read for Paris and Amsterdam, the line would be completed a 2nd time with another +10 points.

Points:

★ YA/Adult Books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 50 pages*
(view spoiler)
(Maximum of 12 points per book)

★ Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*
(view spoiler)
(maximum of 8 points per book)

★ Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*
(view spoiler)
(maximum of 4 points per book)

★ Buddy reads MATCH your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points.
(view spoiler)
(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in this group.)

★ If books are long enough to count on their own (50/75/150 pages) they will be scored on their own.

★ Individual bonus points will be awarded based on page count, the same as page points and buddy read points. So if you read a 300-page book that also matches a description, you will receive 6 page points and 6 bonus points ☺

★ Team bonus points will be awarded based at a rate of 10 points per line completed, and 20 points when all 7 lines are completed, giving a total of 90 bonus points per set of 7 lines.

Hermione bonus points can be earned on books over 600 pages long, because Hermione loves a big book, and we love Hermione ❤️

Over 600 pages unillustrated book = 12 points
Over 600 pages unillustrated childrens/middle-grade book = 8 points
Over 600 pages illustrated/poetry etc. = 4 points

★ Mods will keep track of each team's points, using the following system -

Team Name:

* Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. You will receive a '1' for each book posted which reaches the minimum page count for that type of book

=7 books read; 1 line completed = 10 points.

If there is another book read for Paris and London, the line would be completed a 2nd time with another +10 points.

I'm slightly confused on this part. why does completing one more for Paris and London be another complete? it has to be even across the line to be complete? I'd think completing one more for Paris and Amsterdam would make for another complete? or am i very much confused on how to get the 'complete' line?

Sorry, you're right. It seems to be a typo. It needs to be 'Amsterdam' to complete the line a 2nd time. Thanks for noticing!
