Fated question

I read this shape shifting book back in 2015 that I haven’t been able to find but still remains stuck in my brain to this day! Essentially this girl was a shapeshifter and would carry her clothes around in a bag in her mouth while she was an animal. And the mentor/grandma/guide threatened to put her down if she was a animal kill shifter I think.
I know she could shift naturally but the villains of the story had to kill animals (I think a tiger?) and take their skins to shapeshift. And I definitely think she shifted into a cheetah or something like that. Please help!!!
