If you were young, had some money, were footloose, and fancy free, where would you choose to live?

With all that?! No reason to become stationary at least for a while, until you find a perfect spot or until circumstances not to move further become compelling. There so many things to see and experience! 😎
Good point, Nik. I would choose the beach on the gulf coast here because I know what it's like. But to choose a favorite place in the world, I'd have to travel, and if I had plenty of money, I'd head to Italy first.
Living on the coast sounds exciting. What's interesting about Italy (among many other things) is that they have this program to attract new residents in their disappearing communities that offers to buy a house for a symbolic price of 1 euro but under an obligation to renovate and live there: https://immigrantinvest.com/insider/i...
I'm not young and wouldn't want to be, but I still have plans to relocate to that perfect place. As my family obligations are almost over I am planning for my empty nest years. The best opportunities for my "golden years" career are in Lexington, Kentucky. I travel there frequently and I love everything about it. The culture, cuisine, economy, lovely neighborhoods and glorious countryside are exactly what I like. The weather is also perfect, when I was there last month every day was sunny with temps in the mid-90's........not for everyone I know, but I enjoy it. My daughter is thinking of relocating with me and it would be a good place for her to start her adult life; more so than where we currently live.
Have a smooth transition! Kentucky also offers a nice assortment of local whiskies, which would be another advantage for some 🥃
Kentucky sounds good. When I was in college many years ago, my boyfriend took me to Virginia, where he was born and raised. We went in July, sweltering heat here in Georgia, but I needed a sweater at night up there. We walked in the mountains of a state park without breaking a sweat, and it was beautiful. I hope you and your daughter will be happy in Kentucky.

There are several distilleries just outside of Lexington that offer tours and you can buy bourbon on site. I'll likely take my visiting friends and family to some of them although I'm not much of a drinker myself. Kentucky has legal medical cannabis now and will hopefully go full recreational by the time I get there. The climate combined with the limestone soil should produce some excellent bud.

I've vacationed there several times and seen most of the state except for the coast. We always vacation in the south; my rule of thumb for vacation is that we have to go somewhere with a Waffle House or Buc-ees, preferably both. This summer I had my first Buc-ees experience and......wow! I was not disappointed!
I am torn. As most know, I live in the NYC area. I love the hustle and bustle. However, I also love the quiet and miss the stars and Milky Way. I really miss the woods. If I had the money I probably would snowbird south or west to big sky country.
Years ago, my answer would be NYC, San Francisco, even Miami. Now they'd make my "where would you never want to live." I think I'd like to live near a coast vs inland - somewhere between southern NJ and northern Florida maybe, not the west coast.
My ability to tolerate my fellow human beings has an inverse square relationship to the number of them near me.
Nik wrote: "Have your tastes changed or the cities? :)"My tastes have mellowed a bit. With the hustle and bustle comes the fist fight for anything. In this part of the world, we have what is called the Jersey slide. That is where a car goes from the far left lane right across with no warning four lanes of traffic to get off at an exit. No turn signal and no stopping. they expect you to get out of the way. It is that kind of stupidity I deal with every day and it wears on you.

I'm starting to understand why they made it a crime for people in New Jersey to pump their own gasoline.
