Joanna (walker) | 2309 comments Please post any general questions about the Fall 2024 challenge here.

Elizabeth (Alaska) For the Series style, is it still that there must be at least 3 books to make a series for RwS purposes?

Yep!

Joanna (walker) | 2309 comments Owlette wrote: "For Young, are we using the age at death, that is the author lived to 50 years of age or less?"

Yep. If the author is still living, they must be born no earlier than 1974. If the author is no longer living, they must have died no later than the year when they would have turned 50.

(Our database only uses the year of birth/death, so we won't consider the actual birthdate -- someone born Dec. 1, 1900, will count if she died in 1950 or before, but we won't carry over into 1951 even though she would still have been 50 for most of that year.)

Yes, we will count authors born in 1974.

message 10: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3287 comments for Alice Feeney this is the information I can find regarding her age:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_F...

'She started writing her first novel, Sometimes I Lie, when she was 30, writing in her spare time and on the train to work.'

Sometimes I Lie was published in 2018.

So, I believe she qualifies for the 'young' style.

Thank you. I had noticed there weren’t any authors on the spreadsheet born in 1974, and wanted to verify. Just a coincidence I guess.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I have updated the spreadsheet to include authors born in 1974:

The other spreadsheet wasn't affected.

Yes, but you can access it through the polls. It's in the comments link.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Owlette wrote: "In the spreadsheet, the birth and death years for Beatrix Potter seem off."

Thanks. Her birth year is entered incorrectly - it should be 1866 not 1966. I have deleted her from the sheet. The mods will need to edit her entry in the database to fix it permanently.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Can we get a second halfway finisher if we complete the 20-pointers a second time?

message 22: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (walker) | 2309 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Can we get a second halfway finisher if we complete the 20-pointers a second time?"

Sorry for the delay--we were discussing.

Yes, you can get a half-way finish for each time that you complete the 20-pt. tasks. Same for the 10-pt. tasks. In some seasons, it won't be possible to complete a set more than once because sometimes there's a task that can only be completed one time.

The scrabble finishes this season can be repeated, but tiles can't be reused, so you're limited to the number of tiles available and the requirement to use them in 10-tile sets to make words.

Mega-finish is only awarded one time for finishing all 30 tasks one time.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yay! Thank you!

It's in his wiki history. I think he must have taken it down, but it still shows in the edit history. That's good enough for me.

Katy | 1216 comments Will Bo Seo qualify for the "Young" style (or the "Young" scrabble tile)? His birthdate isn't listed anywhere but in his book he describes being in 5th grade in 2005 and he won a high school debating championship in 2013 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Seo

We'll take that; we plan to record him as 1994 for the database.

Valerie Brown | 3287 comments Laura Wood is listed on the University of Warwick as completing her PhD (in Literature) in 2016. Even if she dragged her education out, she is probably under 40 yo. In her author photo from her book Under a Dancing Star pub. 2019 she looks young.

Will she qualify for young points?

Also, re: post 10 does Alice Feeney qualify?

We will accept both of these.

Given how difficult it has turned out to be to find birthdates for younger authors, we have decided to allow this sort of guestimation for young style points. Please continue to post the basis for it here.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Clarification on series. Is it still that you can claim the Series style for the same series only once for a task?

I claimed Nero Wolfe for 10.7. If I have another Nero Wolfe that works for 10.7, I can't claim 5 series points again.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Bump. Have we clarified whether the Series style can be claimed for the same series on the same task?

message 37: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (walker) | 2309 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Bump. Have we clarified whether the Series style can be claimed for the same series on the same task?"

You can only claim the series once per task.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thank you.

message 39: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1728 comments I think I misunderstood the series style. If the book is part of a series you get +5 for the book if it is the first time you have read the series in the Fall challenge?

message 40: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Sep 30, 2024 07:31PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Example:

Read series “A” for 20.10 - 5 Series points
Read series “A” for 20.3 - 10 Series points

As long as you keep finding different tasks for the same series, the points compound. If you read series “A” for 20.10 again, you get no series points. BUT, you still get the 5 points for multiple this season.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1728 comments Does the definition for series still include series that are at least three long?
In post 83, I posted A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. Goodreads has the book as part of a two book series Monk and Robot. Does it qualify for the series style?

A Psalm for the Wild-Built

Elizabeth (Alaska) I asked that question above, and yes it is still a minimum of 3 installments.
