A story about impossible choices and the inability to control outcomes, I expected this book to be about Asian immigrants finding their way in a foreign country. Instead, I found the focus was on the complexity of parent-child relationships. Told from several perspectives, the most compelling narrative came in the last third of the book, the origin story centered around the atrocities during the Cultural Revolution. I related less to the characters than I thought I would and, admittedly, was not really convinced by the bioscientific spin. Nonetheless, overall I found it to be a stimulating enough read. Solid 3/5 for me.
