Wendy (djuna) | 14 comments I would like to suggest Paola Drigo, whose one book in English (that I know of), Maria Zef, is a devastating portrait of the young daughter of a widowed mother who is a peddler in rural Italy. It shows a kind of life that used to be so common and is now, at least in the first world, mercifully rare. Drigo was a fin-de-siecle Italian novelist who seems to have been an initiator of verismo, a movement influential on Italian film.

Henry Birnbaum | 40 comments Sounds interesting. I put it on my Italy reading list.
Apparently there is a German edition from 1939 published in Switzerland.
