This was shaping up to be such a great book and then that ending was just poor. It reminded me of how children often end their stories when they don’t know where to take them, and so they suddenly just stop after a highly unexpected catastrophic event. In this book, Kit is hired as a nurse to Lenora Hope. She initially doesn’t want to take up the job as people assume that Lenora was responsible for the killings of her parents and her sister over 50 years ago. Lenora has suffered many strokes and is incapable of speaking, and the only way she can communicate with Kit is by typing sentences on an old typewriter. As Kit works with Lenora and helps her to write about the events leading up to her family’s massacre, it becomes clear that there is a lot more to the story than people know. I can’t say I liked any of the characters, but I don’t think I was supposed to. I did really like the atmosphere that the author created, as well as the tension and suspense, which meant I was never sure what was going to happen next. I thought that Lenora’s character could have been developed further and there were just too many unnecessary plot twists to make the story realistic by the end. And I absolutely hated the ending!
