Nikolai and his people prepare for war, Nina continues to work undercover, and the Darkling tries to find a way to regain his power. This is a long book, and the pace would progress in fits and starts, but Bardugo does a nice job of keeping the readers on their toes by switching POV just as something exciting happens. The ending was a bit of a surprise, but a thought-provoking one. And though this is labeled a duology, there is clearly room for more, probably another duology focusing on other characters.
Good solid addition to the series despite its darkness - easy 4 stars for stingy ol' me, but as 269 tagged it 5 stars I feel safe posting it here for the tag of the month.
