Introduction
Hello, campers! Please gather around the fire as we shall uncover why Percy Jackson is the best boyfriend in the history of boyfriends.
Childhood influences
Percy didn't have good male influences in his childhood, his father had left his mother when she was pregnant and his stepfather was The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived (shoutout to lowri and Taylor Swift).
He also had Smelly Gabe in his life who had impacted him profoundly. He was a negative example. He frightened Sally, he was both physically and verbally @busiv3 towards her and verbally towards Percy. This obviously left a deeper mark on Sally, but it also affected Percy. He saw his mother in pain and this angered him, this made him realise that what Gabe was doing was wrong and that he would never do that to someone, ever. There-in lies something truly interesting about children who grow up in broken homes, some are able to realise that what is going on is not normal and grow up to break the cycle, but others realise that what is going on is wrong, but can not break the cycle as it is the only thing they know and have no clue how to break the cycle, turning into their parents. This trauma can affect so many generation before one manages to break the habit. Percy, guided by Sally whom was a positive role model in his early development, manages to break the cycle and do everything in his might to not become like Gabe.
Camp Influences
At camp he meets Chiron who becomes a parental figure to him. He learns patience from him.
Poseidon appears, at last, but I'd argue that Poseidon doesn't impact Percy much in his approach to love. All he knew in the first 12 years of his life was that his father was "not dead, but lost at sea", which obviously causes some abandonment issues, but then he learns the truth and he grows to respect and love Poseidon, but I'll be honest - Poseidon doesn't do much as a father. He shows up more than the other gods, but only when it's strictly necessary, it's not like Percy could walk up to the sea or ocean and be like "Dad, me and Annabeth had a fight!! What should I do now?" And that, folks, is because he has Sally (you can also read the deep dive about Sally here ) to guide him and confide in her.
Grover and Annabeth have also put bricks on this foundation as he learns what it's like to be in a relationship where all inputs are equally important, it's unlike what he had at home.
Luke , yes, Luke has too contributed to building Percy up to be the best boyfriend ever. How so? Simple, he learnt about gaslighting and that it's not fun to be gaslit, so he learnt that he shouldn't do that to his friends/girlfriend (notice how I said "girlfriend" and not "girlfriendS", percabeth is endgame!!).
Quests
Even the quests he went on taught him something that he would use in his relationship - don't take things or people for granted, you never know when you might lose them. Don't act so sure of yourself, because you are not in control of anything.
Sally
She needs her own chapter because she is the most important character in Percy's development. The series gave us even more insight of how she single-handedly did everything she could to make sure Percy would survive. She's the one who turned him into the Percy we all know and love.
Conclusion
All in all, the environment Percy lives in taught him many important lessons that led to him becoming the man he is. His morals helped him not end up like Luke or Gabe and that is why we all wish he was our boyfriend (though, I'll be honest, if I can't have him - I'd take Jason in a heartbeat, and if I can't have him either.... I'll stay single, haha).
Let me know what you think about this and I'll end this deep dive now because I am running out of characters...
