Summer is almost a wrap and here at my friends place in Bordeaux its shocking actually to see the sun set move from day to day along the tree line. The mornings too are now dark when I wake up.Almost finished The Law of Peoples, whew
where is everyone?e hope this isn't the end only of ourl cosy little group.
im traveling rough now and this is my best link with home.
l just finished my blind date with the book from Estonia. I might have to give it 5 stars because i enjoyed it so much. Coastliners by Joanne Harris. I will leave it at the hostel here in Firenze, exchanging it for a Michael Crummy
honest: its those pesky suggestions inttruding that garbled that first paragraph. Hope you catch my drift and are all well
Hi Magdelanye--I love how you get around! To me, you are the definition of a free (and literate) spirit.
I've decided to spend my old age learning ancient Greek so I'm auditing a course at a college in the city (just a small fee, no tuition, so almost free). So I'm spending a lot of time studying.
Reading-wise, I've gotten a couple of books from NetGalley--I just finished Cukor's People--about the films of director George Cukor. I loved the book. Now I'm reading a book about the movie Giant, written by a niece of the author Edna Ferber. I loved the book Giant more than I loved the movie but I'm always interested in movie gossip and also info about how they're made.
Slowly making my way, still, through The Covenant of Water--despite the fact that I'm completely caught up in it when reading, I'm easily distracted by other books.
Also, I'm reading Martyr! a novel by Kaveh Akbar, whose poetry I love. Strong start--so far, a straightforward narrative of an addict/alcoholic in recovery. It's due back to the library i a couple of days so I'm a little worried about finishing it and still trying to keep up (or catch up, actually) with the Greek.
Happy September!Magdelanye, continue to enjoy your adventures. Stay safe and make great memories.
Ellie, how interesting that you're learning Ancient Greek! That's awesome.
I started learning Egyptian Hieroglyphics. I'm borrowing the "beginner" book from the library but I think I may need to track down a copy for myself. Having the book around at all times would be helpful.
I am reading The Physician by Noah Gordon. I read this book about 30 years ago, in German, and really enjoyed it. I'm enjoying it again, in English this time. It's a good story. I intend to continue with the trilogy this time.
delighted to hear from you both and quite awed at your ambitious plans to learn ancient greek and Egyptian hieroglyphics. just wow! It seems some kind of synchronicity is at work there thanks for good wishes
that helps⁸
this trip has certainly confirmed life moves in mysterious ways. When i get the chance i will report more on what i am doing thread.Re the Noah Gordon: I read this 20 years ago, while my father (who was a physician) was in his terminal days, so it remains a special book for me. I did enjoy it and also planned to read the rest of the trilogy but it was hard to find. Let me know how it goes Petra.
Of all things, when I went to enter the book I am currently reading, I discovered that I have already read it, and even wrotten a review.
The title did seem familiar to me, but I put that down to the fact that I love Michael Crummy and am acquainted with his titles. I remember nothing of it! which is a bit odd because its so vividly detailed.
How much longer will you be overseas, Magdelanye? I'm looking forward to hearing your adventures. It's an exciting time. I sometimes start reading a book and it feels familiar. Then a scene will occur and I remember that I read the book before. LOL! That's what comes from a lifetime of constant reading. One forgets titles.....and storylines.
re your last paragraph, yup!As for my return, my ticket is for mid October. Its exciting yes but also challenging. Thanks for your kind thoughts Petra. I will have to remember how to post p
pictures to send that were taken for obvious reasons featuring a rather high end resteraunt in Lithuania and a dress shop in Austria Ellie youve piqued my interest in Kaveh Akbar who is new to me.
Magdelanye, I can't wait to see the pictures--I love to travel vicariously. And this looks like a stupendous trip.I love Akbar's poetry. I haven't read enough of the book to judge--I'm looking it so far. Sadly, I had to return it to the library--I'll put in again. Hate these enforced pauses.
Autumn slowly coming round this year, even though apples were already for picking in August. Slow reading cycle this summer, need to order some new books. I kept many in my loft for retirement, time to open the hatch !
sounds good Ice. I find it kind of thrilling to rediscover old choices. And as for the apples, may they be juicy.
I know what youmean Ellie. Returning a book half read is one of the few downsides of the library. May it return to you soon. I have actually gotten into the habit, if theres just a short bit left, of regading a fine as a donation .
Petra have you managed to track down the rest of Noah Gordons trilogy.
Hows the Egyptian coming along?
I just found a deLello in the hostel here. Americana. What luck!
I loved Galore btw and determined to finish my notes and leave here in Trieste
I returned a perfectly good-condition book to the library because I couldn't renew again. I went to request it again and the library had taken it out of the catalogue because it's damaged! One day after I returned it! What could have happened to damage the book so badly that it's taken out of circulation? It's a mystery.
Magdelanye, I have the Cole Trilogy on my ereader, so have started Shaman already. Too early to say, but the story is intriguing and promising so far.
I love that you're finding random, good reads on your travels.
I have re-acquainted myself with the library on behalf of my lodger ! Otherwise 7 new books in the post ,,,,
The library and new books on the way! That's living! I ordered the Egyptian Hieroglyphs book a couple of weeks ago and today found out that the publisher cannot sell the book in Canada! Weird.....very weird.
So, my order was cancelled and I ordered from Better World Books, online. The book is now on it's way to me.
I'm still using the library copy of this book.......wonder how they got it?! LOL!
So, I, too, am using the library and have a book in the post.
I miss my library but fortunately most hostels have at least a few books for trade.I found a real one here in Sarajevo but it was closed.
Hope you both get your treasures soon, Petra and Ice Bear
Need to add that it might be stupid but actually not so weird that your book was not distributed in Canada. While I was doing the ordering for my bookstore, there were plenty books from the U.S. and the U.K. that did not have distribution rights in Canada.
Totally frustrating
Sarajevo is a city arrayed across a bowl of hills and when the weather is iffy, so is the internet connection. I had to wait until today when I got a new Croatian SIM card and emegerged from the sultry charm of Bosnia into dazzling sun that Ive been able to connect. This may seem like a small thing, but nearing the end of my time here, surrounded by people who barely speak English, I am reminded how important connection is.Managed to trade my last book, another epic, for the only other possibility, which I entered just now to find lukewarm reviews. I think im going to have to start a new shelf (sigh)for these thrillers but they are good for long bus rides.
Whats everyone up to this last day of September?
