Oscar-Claude Monet was a French painter and founder of impressionism painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions of nature, especially as applied to plein air (outdoor) landscape painting. The term "impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant, which was first exhibited in the so-called "exhibition of rejects" of 1874–an exhibition initiated by Monet and like-minded artists as an alternative to the Salon.

Hasui Kawase (川瀬 巴水) was a Japanese artist who was one of 20th century Japan's most important and prolific printmakers. He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by yōga (Western-style painting). Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting.

Hermanus Koekkoek, sometimes referred to as The Elder was a Dutch painter, etcher, and graphic artist. He specialized in marine art.
He was a member of the famous Koekkoek Painting Family [nl]; the son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, and brother of the landscape painters, Barend Cornelis, Johannes [de] and Marinus Adrianus. His sons, Hermanus (the Younger), Willem, Johannes Hermanus Barend, and Hendrik Barend [nl], all became painters. He also had three daughters.

Frits Thaulow was a Norwegian Impressionist painter, best known for his naturalistic depictions of landscape.
In the summer of 1905 Frits Thaulow spent some time with his family at La Panne, a small bathing resort on the Flemish coast. He had acquired a small automobile (one of the first of its kind on the market), and it appears that he went on trips in it to small Belgian towns in the area.

Jacobus Theodorus "Jacob" Abels (1803–1866) was a Dutch painter. He was a pupil of the animal painter Jan van Ravenswaay. In 1826 Abels had visited Germany, and on his return settled at the Hague. His wife was the daughter of Pieter Os. Between 1849 and 1853 he lived in Haarlem and later he moved to Arnhem.
He was especially noted for his paintings of moonlit landscapes. The Museum at Haarlem has works painted by him.

He also painted beaches, dunes, forests, winter scenes, portraits in landscapes, as well as mythological and biblical scenes. He belongs to a group of painters referred to as the Dutch Italianate painters, who combined Dutch agricultural landscapes with mythological or Arcadian scenes in Italian settings. The Dutch artist Johannes Hilverdink was born in 1813 in Groningen. He was a watercolorist, lithographer, painter, draftsman, pastelist and graphic artist. He was the son of the actors Jacobus Hilverdink (1783-1828) and Anna Maria Corver. His mother was a granddaughter of the famous actor Marten Corver. Hilverdink studied under Jan Willem Pieneman and Jean Augustin Daiwaille at the Art Academy in Amsterdam. Hilverdink painted in the style of the Romantic School. His genre was landscapes and seascapes. He also painted church interiors and city views. He traveled abroad to Belgium, Germany, England, France and Greenland. Hilverdink was a member of the “Arti et Amicitiae” and a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam.
Hilverdink’s work is in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Boymans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
