Hi everyone, sorry I haven’t used the group in a while, I’ve been busy, but I was glad to see some people are using it recently.

I just finished a book on Lewis and Clark, and I was looking for a good book recommendation from you guys. I was thinking about a book that talks about the American Indian wars, or a book on the war of 1812, but really any books that anyone in the group has read recently -history wise- that they think are worth reading about any historical topic.

Vanessa M. (vanessamlovesburbs) | 10 comments Hi Creighton--thanks for starting this group! I'm really enjoying the interactions and book recommendations. I've made several great GR friends as a result.

Dimitri and Rick, I'll check out the books you've mentioned above.

I read Peter Cozzens' book A Brutal Reckoning Andrew Jackson, the Creek Indians, and the Epic War for the American South by Peter Cozzens by Peter Cozzens and it was very good.

The Earth Is Weeping: The Epic Story of the Indian Wars for the American West looks just as interesting.

Mike | 17 comments The most recent one that I read was Demons of Unrest by Eric Larson that was about the events leading up to the US Civil War battle for Fort Sumter. One of my favorites is Grant by Ron Chernow.

Tommy Hughes | 2 comments Just recently finished "The Elite" by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. It was an interesting venture into what he considered to be history's special forces. From the Spartans to modern day Delta operators. Although somewhat abbreviated in its story telling (not a very long book) it does well to tell stories of various elite groups throughout time. I particularly enjoyed the telling of Alexander's siege of Sogdian Rock. An incredible tale of determination and might.

Thanks for the heads up. Looks interesting. For $1.34 for the Kindle version, I’m buying it.

If you are interested in the Indian Wars and other aspects of American history during that time, I strongly recommend this one. It's definitely a standout.
Blood and Treasure Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier by Bob Drury Blood and Treasure: Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier

Two books I'd recommend:

On Desperate Ground The Marines at The Reservoir, the Korean War's Greatest Battle by Hampton Sides On Desperate Ground: The Marines at The Reservoir, the Korean War's Greatest Battle

Khe Sanh Siege in the Clouds (Marines in Vietnam) by Eric Hammel Khe Sanh: Siege in the Clouds

Zygmunt, High Tide in the Korean War: How an Outnumbered American Regiment Defeated the Chinese at the Battle of Chipyong-ni just came highly recommended by a fellow military history reader. This is a detailed account of the Battle of Chipyong-nil. Sounds like it might be right what you were looking for.

I can recommend The Last Stand of Fox Company: A True Story of U.S. Marines in Combat by Bob Drury, Tom Clavin a story of the retreat from Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War.

From Vietnam We Were Soldiers Once... and Young: Ia Drang - The Battle that Changed the War in Vietnam by Harold G. Moore, and Joseph L. Galloway.

Both are really excellent books.
