This thread is for discussing the book milk and honey by Rupi Kaur, if possible focusing the discussion on it being banned but any discussion of it is fine.

Jennifer W | 118 comments I got this from the library today and read part one. Holy intensity, Batman!! It is a graphic depiction of rape and abuse. I can see why it would make people uncomfortable. Honestly, it's making me a little uncomfortable, which I'm sure is the intent. Yet I have to wonder how this would sit with a teen or college age girl who has experienced these things? It could be reaffirming that she's not alone.

I'm also asking myself, at what age would I want my daughter to read this? She's only 6, so I have a way to go before I have to worry about that, but I also have a 14 year old niece...

Jennifer W | 118 comments Read parts 2 and 3. Still pretty intense, but not as much as part 1. I hope to finish it today or tomorrow.

Jennifer W | 118 comments Finished. Really enjoyed the last section. The writing throughout was evocative and powerful. I can understand why people wouldn't want their children reading this in high school. It's intense. Of course, that doesn't mean I would support banning it, but it may well be the most disturbing depictions of rape and assault I have read.

These books definitely aren't for everyone. But who is going to expose a six year old to this? Only someone who would expose her to other really bad stuff. Up to a point, I think it's up to the parents to decide when and what is right for their child. But I don't think they should dictate what others can tell their children or forbid their kids to read what the teacher recommends or what is in the library at their school. But that assumes the books aren't banned from those places. I also think there comes a point that when a child can have a say in their own reproductive medicine, age 13, they have the right to choose what they want to read.

But it's a fine line to tread. I'd like to err on the side of all books being available to all children rather than have some heavy handed parent controlling their child's learning and exploration.
