Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4914 comments Dear Evan Hansen is the story of a high-school senior suffering from social anxiety, who is urged by a therapist to write encouraging letters to himself. One of his letters is stolen and found in the pocket of a classmate who commits suicide. When Connor's parents find the letter, they assume it was genuinely addressed to his friend, Evan Hansen, who doesn't want to tell them the truth. Instead, he creates a fabricated friendship with the dead boy and finds himself welcomed by the Murphy family.

The novel, Dear Evan Hansen, was written to bring Evan’s story to a wider audience, and is targeted at readers who may never be able to make the trip to Broadway, as well as fans of the show.

The novel covers the whole story, including details they don't have in the play. It's unlike the script, and tells the story from Evan's point of view. It also includes some chapters with Connor, as a ghost, giving context to his death.

I would recommend the novel. It was enjoyable and takes a deeper look the messages from the play, like honest communication, empathy, kindness, and finding meaningful real life relationships.
