I have never read these books before, but I’ve seen a few people read and positively review them so I thought I would try at least the first in the series. The book was quite entertaining, and I can see why it would be popular with children. I also liked how it tried to be educational at the same time, as it would use what would be some quite big words for the target audience, and then explain what they meant. There were lots of bad and sad things that happened in this book for children, and I can imagine that some parts would seem quite scary. Whilst it was quite a dark story, the characters are clearly divided into “good” and “bad”, and it was a book that I enjoyed.

I never read them either Hannah-and like you have a noticed a lot of folk reading them this month. I do not think they are anything I would reach for unless I could use them for a challenge, but I will make a note of them and use in the future if possible.

I have a couple more out of the library, but having just read and reviewed the second book in this series, I'm not sure how many more I might read.
I’d say the reading challenge is a good explanation for its sudden popularity. I read one and that was enough for me. It felt longer than it really was. Most of the adult characters were dumb, selfish, or totally evil. There is no subtlety here. I remember an age when I saw adults that way, and I might have loved the sarcastic humor. The kids in the story are brave and ingenious, so that’s very empowering.
