This book has been on my TBR since forever. I knew it was popular, but I hesitated about picking it up. It happens with many popular books when I fear they won't live up to the hype. Besides, I'm reticent about books with depressed main characters out of fear they will trigger me (although as an adult, I understand and accept myself a bit better than I did as a teenager, so I'm less likely to get triggered).
This book, although about a character with depression, is a comedy. Ove is the prototype of the angry old man (although I don't feel comfortable with calling him old at 59 years old) who has had enough of life and decides he wants to die. As we read on, we discover he has, in fact, plenty of reasons to be angry, and behind that anger hides a really big heart.
I fell in love with the taciturn Ove, like so many other readers. I found a lot of myself in him and felt like I understood him. I also adored his love story with his wife - it's a love like that we're all looking for. Life has not been kind to Ove, but it gave back in the last years of his life.
This is the kind of book that reminds people not to judge. It is also the kind of book I adore, but I doubt many people would dislike it.
