I just had a very nice message from David Walker’s son, thanking me for reviewing his late father’s books. He wrote only two books for children, they are delightful picture books about a cat called Pimpernel. They are called The Fat Cat Pimpernel, and the sequel is Pimpernel and the Poodle. The second book is particularly amusing, it describes the unlikely friendship between Pimpernel, a shy humble cat, and Yorick, a stuck up French poodle. They are United by their love of food and their hatred of the fearsome dog Ludovic, who terrorises their neighbourhood. I was delighted to be told that Yorick really did exist, he belonged to Mrs Walker. Anyway, these are charming books, with striking illustrations by Alan Howard, and I think even nowadays children might enjoy them.(I’ve added some photos).
