Riding the Highways: Over the Rivers & Through the Woods Scenic Byway

Jillian is taking us to Oregon to explore this byway that travels along OR 228 & US 20. Come join the fun!

This 66-mile route begins in the rich farmland of the Willamette Valley. With access to rivers, reservoirs, parks and campgrounds, many trails and snow-play areas, this Byway offers a wide range of recreational activities. The Byway also runs adjacent to historic Santiam Wagon Road which was part of the first transcontinental auto race in 1905, when two cars left New York City for Portland, Oregon on a 40-day journey!

Here's how it work:
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

1. Starting Point: Brownsville-Linn County Historical Museum

Brownsville, Oregon was established in 1846 and is Oregon’s third oldest town. Linn County Historical Museum has helped preserve the rich history of Native People’s cultural heritage, Oregon Trail immigrants, and pioneer settlers. Featured at the museum is Brownsville’s original railroad depot and six Southern Pacific railroad cars. The Oregon Trail exhibit features the Drinkard family’s covered wagon from their 1865 journey. The museum also houses an extensive Genealogy Section.

2. Drive 8 Miles to Crawfordsville Covered Bridge

East from Brownsville, travelers come upon Crawfordsville, a quiet farming and logging community established in the 1870s by Philemon Crawford. The Crawfordsville Covered Bridge spans the Callapooia River and is adjacent to the Byway. The bridge was built in 1932 with an open truss style and slit windows that were later enlarged and rounded. In 1976, the bridge was featured in the television movie, The Flood. Unfortunately, in a 1996 flood, the bridge sustained severe damage which tore through the side skirting and floor beam. A grant from the Oregon Covered Bridge Program has allowed the county to repair the bridge.

3. Drive 4 Miles to Holley

Continuing east is the tiny logging town of Holley, which dates to 1847. A small town with a population of 378 from the 2010 census. It is the perfect stop for rock enthusiasts. Holley blue agates are a rare dark blue-ribbon agate found only near Holley, Oregon.

4. Drive 4 Miles to Sweet Home

Sweet Home is referred to as the 'Gateway to the Santiam Playground' due to its proximity to nearby lakes, rivers and the Cascade Mountains. US Highway 20 runs adjacent to the historic Santiam Wagon Road. The first tollgate on the wagon road was built at the east end of Sweet Home. While many wagon roads were bringing settlers west, the Santiam Wagon Road led settlers and livestock east to the rich pastures of Central Oregon.

5. Drive 5 Miles to Foster Reservoir

Our next stop is Foster Reservoir, a reservoir created by Foster Dam on the South Santiam River. This is the perfect stop for both shoreline fishing and boat angling. Anglers can pursue rainbow trout, Kokanee salmon, and bass. Foster Reservoir is also a popular destination for a variety of water sports including boating, water skiing, jet skiing, triathlons and water polo tournaments. There are also three parks where you can picnic, play volleyball and camp.

6. Drive 14 Miles to Cascadia State Park- Soda Creek Falls

Cascadia State Park also includes two primary hiking trails. The one-mile Soda Creek Falls Trail follows Soda Creek to Lower Soda Creek Falls. The 3/4-mile loop River Trail descends to the South Santiam River. An interesting fact was in 1896, George Geisendorfer opened a resort to capitalize on what he called the "curative powers" of Soda Creek's mineral spring water. The resort later burned down, and the property was acquired by the state in 1940.

7. Drive 4 Miles to Cascadia State Park-Cascadia Cave

Cascadia State Park provides access to Cascadia Cave, one of the oldest known archaeological sites on the west coast. The 8,000-year-old American Indian petroglyph site is home to the largest display of petroglyphs in Western Oregon. It is a spiritual place for the Santiam Band of the Kalapuya and Molala people. Dozens of petroglyphs represent significant events in the lives of their ancestors, including bear-claw marks that indicate that the shelter is a place of Bear power.

8. Drive 6 Miles to Longbow Organization Camp

Longbow Organization Camp was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. The campground has six alpine shelters that can accommodate up to 48 people. There is also a covered cooking area and amphitheater for up to 75 people. Visitors can fish along the South Santiam River or hike on the historic Santiam Wagon Road. This historic campground is open to visitors from the end of April to the 1st of October.

9. Drive 1 Miles to Menagerie Wilderness- Walton Ranch Interpretive Trail

In 1984, the United States Congress designated the Menagerie Wilderness which now totals 4,965 acres and is managed by the Forest Service. We are going to traverse three trails that can be enjoyed year-round. Walton Ranch Interpretive Trail is wheelchair accessible. It offers a panoramic view of the lower canyon with two platforms. The first platform provides a view of the Walton Ranch site and wildlife habitat area. The second platform provides a better view of the west end of the meadow, where elk concentrate during winter months.

10. Drive 0.5 Miles to Menagerie Wilderness- Trout Creek Trail

The Menagerie Wilderness has a series of rock pinnacles, and each is named after a different animal: Roosters Tail, Chicken Rock, Hen Rock, Turkey Monster, and North and South Rabbit Ears are a few examples. Trout Creek Trail (3.3 miles) has a gradual incline and leads to the base of Rooster Rock, the most famous of the rock pinnacles. This trail can be hiked or biked.

11. Drive 3 Miles to Menagerie Wilderness- Rooster Rock Trail Head

Rooster Rock Trail Head is a short but steeper hike to Rooster Rock. Rooster Rock served as a Forest Service lookout location until 1963, now only the bolts remain of the lookout. Mountaineers from around the Pacific Northwest use the spires and cliffs to hone their technical climbing skills. If you want to see the rest of the "menagerie," you'll have to hike cross-country over rugged terrain.

12. Drive 1 Miles to Mountain House

Our road trip continues along the South Santiam River until we reach Mountain House. It is a beautiful drive especially in fall as the big leaf maples and red alder provide contrast to the Douglas-fir, western hemlock and red cedar. Mountain House is now a private residence but used to provide a reprieve for weary travelers. This is also the western-most trailhead to access the wagon road.

13. Drive 2 Miles to House Rock Campground

House Rock Campground is perched at the intersection of Sheep Creek and the South Santiam River in an old growth grove. The river is a 66-mile tributary of the Santiam River that is fed by snowmelt from the Cascade Mountains. Along the riverfront swimmers have access to shallow areas and anglers can fish for the native cutthroat trout. Campers can enjoy hiking the House Rock Trail, which shares paths with the historic Santiam Wagon Road.

14. Drive 10 Miles to Iron Mountain

Iron Mountain was named for its appearance, layers and layers of deep red and orange metallic rock. Throughout the summer, Iron Mountain provides habitat for more than 300 species of flowering plants. The Iron Mountain/Cone Peak is a 6.6-mile loop, but there is a shorter 2.4-mile hike. The hike will pass through several meadows interspersed with alpine trees before reaching the bare volcanic rock at the top.

15. Drive 1 Miles to Tombstone Pass

Tombstone Pass marks the beginning of a treacherous seven-mile climb and gains over 2,500 feet in elevation. Fortunately, there are several pullouts to view the vistas of Jumpoff Joe, Green Mountain and Iron Mountain. Tombstone Pass was named after a family tragedy in 1871, James McKnight was accidentally shot while retrieving his guns and his mother placed a tombstone in his honor.

16. Drive 3 Miles to Lost Prairie

Lost Prairie is named after a scouting party that became lost. After several days of frustration, a member of the party climbed a tall tree and spotted Sand Mountain to the east, regaining their bearings. Lost Prairie is located near Hackleman Creek and Hackleman Old Growth Trail. One trail leads to historic Santiam Wagon Road and the other loop trails takes you through a classic old growth stand of Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Western Hemlock. Some of the trees are more than 500 years old!

17. Drive 4 Miles to Lava Lake Sno-Park

Ready, set, snow! Lava Lake Sno-Park is perfect spot for snow enthusiasts. There are five main trails for different winter activities: Cross-country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Snowmobiling. The sno-park is a popular area, but with the many trail options, you’re bound to find some solitude in the snowy wonderland that is the Willamette National Forest.

18. Drive 1 Miles to West Cascades Scenic Byway and the McKenzie Pass- Santiam Pass Scenic Byway

We traveled through the Willamette Valley filled with rushing streams and thick forests into the Cascades. Along the way we passed through some of Oregon's oldest settlements, while experiencing the geographic diversity of five Western Oregon ecosystems. Though we have reached the end of the Over the Rivers & Through the Woods Scenic Byway, you can see more beautiful scenery on the West Cascades and McKenzie Pass-Santiam Scenic Byways which both start where this byway ends.
