The Bad Beginning starts off with the three Baudelaire children receiving the devastating news that their parents have just died in a terrible fire that has also destroyed their beautiful mansion. Now orphans, they have temporarily been placed with a banker named Mr Poe, who is in charge of their enormous fortune. They are eventually placed with Count Olaf, a new guardian.

There are a lot of dark moments. Count Olaf treats them like free labor. He’s controlling and creepy and obviously a villain. I loved Violet, Klaus, and Sunny who endure unimaginable hardships. No matter what bad things happen to them, they are always loyal towards each other.

The writing style of the book is intentionally simplistic, catering to its younger target audience. I think it made the story accessible and easily comprehensible for children.

"The Bad Beginning" is filled with suspense, mystery and humor. The unpredictable twists and turns keeping me engaged and intrigued throughout. I bought the series for my grandchildren years ago and they just loved them. I think it also encouraged them to become the readers they are today.
