Do you multitask while you audiobook? Or do you stay focused? Sometimes one thing, sometimes another?

Sometimes our GR friends or other reading friends want to know a pointer or two about how to start audiobookong? What is one or two things you suggest that sometimes helps you and your friends?

I suggest using Wikipedia or some online study guide for a list of character and perhaps place names. Without a such a list, hearing or knowing how to spell a name can lead to confusion, frustration.

Lamilla | 837 comments I love listening to audiobooks, but sometimes it's hard to stay focused, even if I don't do anything simultaneously!

The narrator is definitely a key - If I l dislike the voice, it's almost impossible to finish a book. Another tip would be to select an app that allows to change speed.

I have an audiobook on my readathon TBR, Музыка и мозг, hope to get to it in the time remaining!

Oh yes, I had this with some romantasy, which favours weird name spelling!

Vavita | 162 comments I always listen to audiobooks while:
Driving
Cleaning the house
Doing the garden

I test the audio before buying it and make sure the voice of the narrator will jot lull me to sleep… I try to gather info about the plot as well. I don’t like audiobooks that have too many characters because I get confused. Audios are easier to follow when they have few characters.

Changing speed is Helpful. I tend to listen at 1.2 or 1.4 in English and 1.6 in Spanish. I don’t do audios in German because I then need to drop to 0,8! LOL!

Taya Fosmire (bibliotaya) | 41 comments I love listening to audiobooks while I am driving or doing house chores! Sometimes if I have the physical book, I'll follow along but most of my audiobooking is done when i want to read while doing other things

I enjoy audiobooks best when I have simple hand sewing tasks to do, such as hemming or stitching small craft projects.

Cathy (cathepsut) | 594 comments Yes, I tend to multitask when listening to audiobooks. But it can‘t be anything that requires active thinking, because I will immediately loose track of the audio.

You definitely need an app that allows you to adjust speed, so you can listen to your audio at your usual reading speed.

I recommend listening to a sample of a book first to ensure that you like the narrator.

Extremely complex stories are not something I do well on audio. For that I need to switch to eye-reading. I just take in more details that way.

Vicki Willis | 521 comments Yes, love audio books!
I listen while I am walking the dog..
My tip - get a library card and get them for free on Libby or Cloud Library.

Cathy (cathepsut) | 594 comments I am using Libby, although the choice tends to be a bit limited due to the small size of my local library. Great option! I am pondering to get another library card from Stuttgart just for more Libby choices. They only take 20€ a year for a library card, so it‘s easily worth it and supports the library at the same time.

In my favourite GR group we read a lot of new books, so I have an Audible subscription for the newer books.
