it was originally written for radio
it used to be available free on the BBC website but seems to be absent now :o(
the LP recording of the first series is available on YouTube,
as is a fan-recreated read-through of the radio scripts,
and there's also a read-through of the book by Douglas Adams!

Over the years it has been the radio show, two TV BBC TV productions and after great pains by Douglas Adams, a Movie. Tho not a very good one, (love the opening song). And the too many books.I have owned most and almost regret giving up the cassette tape version of the original Radio broadcasts.
The Wife and I had the pleasure of having Marvin the paranoid android (no not the actor, but the real depressed person), even if he did have pains in all of the diodes on the right side of his body-as our waiter in a very expensive New Orleans restaurant, but that is another story.
