I am struggling with this book. It is SO depressing and, especially now, I would really like to read something happy. My Pages & Popcorn group is doing "Dashing Through the Snow" for December so I am reading that to cleanse my palate. I should be able to finish this before discussion but each time I have to force myself to pick it up again.
This is a wonderfully written and thought-provoking book, however, I can't say I enjoyed it. Overall, I don't believe dystopian stories are my cup of tea. It was interesting to read this book now because it begins in 2024 and ends in 2027. I found it quite depressing. The only hopeful thing I could keep in mind was the real 2024 wasn't AS bad as the 2024 in the book. It made me wonder why I can read about sad things in historical fiction and they don't bother me as much as depressing things set in the future. I think it is because I always look to the future with hope instead of dread. I don't want to read things that make it even harder for me to believe that humans will continue to do better and be better. Give me a Star Trek universe over the one in this book any day.
