OutsideOfTheTrack | 2 comments Hi, I’m Gwendolyn from OutsideOfTheTrack Books! I’m currently reading *One Dark Window* and absolutely love all things romanceβ€”especially when it leans to the darker side. My hobbies include playing hockey, reading and writing, painting, and boating. I’m 29 (but let’s not talk about how close 30 is, okay?). Feel free to add meβ€”I love making new friends!

message 18: by Ivy (new)

Ivy Nightingale (ivynightingale) | 59 comments Mod
Hi Gwendolyn, I love painting too, though I can’t even remember the last time I picked up a brush. It’s so cool that you play hockey, and I spend my time exploring forests. πŸ‘‹βœ¨

message 19: by Brian (new)

Brian Eshleman (brianesh73) | 3 comments My name is Brian Eshleman. I like the Chronicles of Narnia.

My hobby used to be reading, reading, reading. I averaged something like a book a day for about eight years.

Then I discovered people! I have made some outstanding friends and reading them has put a significant dent in my total. Reading people is FASCINATING.

They do have these things called jobs, which I got to retire early from because of my cerebral palsy. Life is not either/or, so when the texts are not dinging during much of the day and I am not writing on or reading the Bible and books based around it, I am looking to entice myself back to a more casual reading pace.

I was trying to remember the title of a fantasy novel I read that was set in the future. The Bible had been lost and was rediscovered. Even AI couldn't come up with it. Anybody know it?

This book you are looking for... did it discuss the bible in a favorable or negative way?

I’d rather say that by now it’s hard to define when I actually sleep... mostly whenever I get the chance. I’m usually "working" day and night
Yesterday, I went to bed around 2 AM because I was working on the website and some illustrations. But the next morning, a new day starts again
I’ve gotten used to it by now...

message 25: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Kamaeva | 89 comments Hey! I'm Kristina. I like a lot of books; it's hard to choose. My favorite fantasy author is Terry Pratchett. Hogfather and Small Gods I liked most.
I also love books that both kids and adults can read. The Moomins and the Great Flood or Ella Enchanted for example :)
My hobby is writing and more recently translating of my writings into English. I write fantasy and fairy tales.

Hi everyone, I’m Walter! πŸ“š

My favorite book series has to be The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordanβ€”I’m currently reading The Shadow Rising and loving it.

🌟 As for hobbies, I’m all about cycling, walking, and just being myself (with a healthy dose of humor, of course).

Looking forward to connecting with fellow bookworms here!

message 27: by Morwen (new)

Morwen (morwen42) | 89 comments Mod
Hi Walter! I've enjoyed the Wheel of Time too, but boy, it took me 7 months from start to finish :D

message 28: by Walter (new)

Walter | 34 comments Mod
Hi Morwen,

Wow, seven monthsβ€”that’s impressive! For me, I’m taking a different approach. I’m aiming for about two books a year because I really enjoy the series and don’t want it to end too quickly. I want to savor the journey!

message 29: by Morwen (new)

Morwen (morwen42) | 89 comments Mod
ah quickly it won't end for sure! :D But it's so complex, in the true style of "olde fantasy", that even reading them all back to back I had to keep a browser tab open on a WOT Wiki (so many names, so many SIMILAR names!!), so I don't think I could have made it if I popped just in and out of it part-time :) But again I'm all for full immersions!

Yours is an approach I wouldn't even have thought of, so if you ever made a post about how it is to dive into such a world with your method, I'd be curious to read it :)

message 30: by Walter (last edited Nov 21, 2024 04:14AM) (new)

Walter | 34 comments Mod
Ah, you’re rightβ€”it definitely won’t end quickly! πŸ˜„ And I completely get what you mean about the complexity. So many names, and half of them sound like they could be siblings! It’s like Robert Jordan decided to challenge us all to a memory game.

Your back-to-back reading style sounds intense (and impressive)! I can see how full immersion would work for such a rich and detailed world. My approach is definitely slower, but it lets me savor each moment without feeling overwhelmed.

To keep track, I use a map while reading: Wheel of Time map (https://wheeloftimelines.com/map). It’s been a lifesaver! Plus, there’s an app called The Wheel of Time Compendium where I can mark which book I’m on and look up characters without risking spoilersβ€”it’s like having a spoiler-free cheat sheet.

Oh, and after each chapter, I discuss it with ChatGPT. It’s like having my own virtual reading buddy! Sure, it takes more time, but honestly, I’m having so much fun that I don’t mind.

I wouldn’t mind making a post about this method if you’re curious!

message 31: by Morwen (new)

Morwen (morwen42) | 89 comments Mod
That's interesting! Also the chat gpt part! I used maps and online resources, but I do not have your kind o patience for sure! Your approach is very cool, even if I'd probably go mad if I tried it.

Ivy Nightingale (ivynightingale) | 59 comments Mod
Hi Kristina, welcome to the group! Hi Walter! It was so great reading your lines, and if you're interested, I'd be happy to create a topic about reading habits. I think it would be really interesting... Morwen, I haven't said this yet, but it's awesome having you here! I love reading your posts, though I usually don't have time to reply. But even just in these few days, I've already come across some really thought-provoking lines! Shannon, if there was a like button, I'd definitely like your comments a lot! Brian, hope you're doing well! :D Have a great day, everyone! πŸ’«

message 39: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw Hi, I'm Doug. I read a lot of fantasy. Started with one of the most poetic and beautiful novels of all time, Lord of the Rings. I've recently been on a Joe Abercrombie run, having read maybe 9 or 10 of his. They are the R-rated fantasy books, LOL

I did the audible of Fairytale by Stephen King lately and enjoyed it.

Looking forward to the fifth book of the Brandon Sanderson's Stromlight Archive.

Howdy All, I am P. Pherson. I am Fantasy Author, and have been for about 30 years. I have written a ton of stuff, some of which has been published here or there, and most not. I have also read a ton of stuff, but mostly from writers that probably never made it to GoodReads. My favorite Author is a woman named Lesli Wilder, who used to blow me away with her ability to spin a story. I saw a while back, she got something published along side Neil Gaiman, so good for her.

I dont know what my favorite fantasy story is, but it might be Watership Down.

I am 56, and have had many hobbies over the years. Currently, I am putting a ton of energy into the series that I've been writing for many years, the White Sword Saga, and occassionally playing guitar.

I am not a fast reader, and dont tend to read for the same reasons others do (for me, it is kind of like homework), but I do read a lot, and probably some of those things overlap some of what you have read.

Happy to meet everyone, and hope we get to know each other better.

Likewise! I love the world-building in LOTR; I believe Tolkien is unmatched when it comes to that. I'm trying to learn how to Sindarin elvish

Howdy Olivia, Welcome here.

LOTR is a mixed bag for me. I admire so much of it, but actually, I found them hard to get through when I read them. But...man, he did so much, its hard to write anything and not have it ring back to him.

The fantasy I actually enjoyed the most was the Belgariad. It was just funner to read.
