This book addresses the ways people can create an “upward spiral” to avoid the well-known downward spiral into anxiety and depression. It is particularly helpful for those actively experiencing depression but can also be an excellent resource for those who simply want to understand mental health more fully. It includes scientific explanations of the biochemical and neurological processes and does so in a way that is understandable to a person without a deep scientific background. It is told in two parts. The first explains the sources of depression, neurotransmitters, and the parts of the brain involved. The second contains many useful steps to be taken to stop or reverse negative thoughts. Some of these we have heard before, such as exercise, but they bear repeating. It also contains tips on getting better sleep, which I found helpful. I think the material in this book could be useful to anyone, regardless of whether they suffer from chronic depression, since everyone feels down or anxious occasionally, and there are positive ways to keep from descending into despair or hopelessness.

PBT Comments: This book contains lots of good tips for dealing with depression and anxiety and can be useful to people just feeling down or less hopeful, too.
