As I’m making my way through Kreeft’s summary of the Catholic Church catechism, I’m very interested in reading about the Council of Trent. What I’m looking for, I’d hope either two recommendations on either side of the aisle or one neutral text leaning toward informative.

As part of its treatment of general church history, A History of Christianity (Harper, 1953) by Baptist missionary and Yale church history professor Kenneth Scott Latourette covers the Council of Trent. Of course, that's a relatively small part of a 1,516-page book, but it's a solid starting point. For a Roman Catholic treatment, How The Reformation Happened, by French-born British intellectual Hilaire Belloc, presents a more detailed account of the Council, which included significant information that I didn't previously know. Although he was a committed Catholic (and wears the fact on his sleeve!), Belloc did try in this book to be as even-handed, fair and honest in his historical reportage as he could.
