One of my recent favourites is: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (probably best known for The Martian). It’s quite thought provoking, has plenty of scientific proof (not that I could check the math), but is not just serious but also funny and sweet.
I'll start:
The Misenchanted Sword, by Lawrence Watt-Evans. I read a lot of 'humorous' fantasy in the late 80s and throughout the 90s, and most of it was disappointing (I don't think Craig Shaw Gardner gave me even a single laugh, and I kept buying his books...)
This wasn't funny (or 'zany', as was the favored word back then)--but it was a surprising combination of rousingly bloody and cosily interesting: There was this whole unfolding story, as the protagonist got older while being unable to die... and since he's not a superhero, just a former soldier-now-innkeeper, this isn't some tragic battle, it's a serious life problem...
Not my all-time favorite (like a lot of nerds of my generation, I go for the huge brain-wracking tomes, like Snow Crash, Stand On Zanzibar, or Illuminatus!--but a really fun novel. The Misenchanted Sword
