The Collins character is great, but I didn't like the story. Too much of the storyline was about negative behavior of specific characters, telling those characters off, and pulling the wool over other their eyes and having fun about it. there was something so angry about it all. Aside from the taking to task of the Bennet parents, the whole undertone of the story lacked joy. And the pollyanna of some of the characters was ott too. It all felt so extreme.

Tapestry is a good series, but I really only remember two scenes.
1. Early in the book Mr. Bennet runs into Lydia and is struck to discover she has developed curves, even though he still thinks she is a child.

2. Mary marries a missionary and spends years in Africa.
She arrives back in England with her husband and many children (not all of them hers) and goes to Darcy House without any message received before.

I did enjoy that.
I had seen her on PBS shows, but I somehow thought her book would be slow moving and a bit dry. Very pleasant surprise for me.
Jane would have been proud!

I just saw a notice that Miss Austen will be on Masterpiece in May. Has it already been shown in the UK? I'm looking forward to it.

I'll tell all. Tunbridge Wells is my nearest town (about 7 miles away) so I walk past the fountain where you can "take the waters" on a regular basis. I have to admit I have never been brave enough to give them a whirl - I prefer the coffee shop a few doors down!

Full disclosure: I was so angry with Elizabeth Bennet in the opening chapter that I nearly gave this book a DNF – did not finish!

Quote from the book: My sister, who had seized my elbow, released my arm but grabbed hold of a large handful of my skirt instead. She squeezed her eyes shut as I feathered the horses — who were still running at a gallop — around a rutted corner. The wheels came up on Kitty’s side for just a second as we made the arc, and we landed with a terrific bump that nearly tipped us into a ditch before dashing down the straightest part of the lane towards the Lindbury Wood.

More disclosure: I love horse racing, but I see how many fatal injuries occur even on the best tracks.

Elizabeth instigates a race with her ponies against Fitzwilliam Darcy’s blood horses, putting three humans and four horses in a dangerous situation. Darcy believes he is racing to stop a runaway with two women. Elizabeth wants only to win. To quote George Knightley: It was badly done, indeed!

I am so with you - I really, really did not like the opening (not the writing) i.e. Elizabeth. I put it down for a few days. I am still not at a point where I am so engrossed to overcome that. In fact, it confirmed that Elizabeth was quite Lydia like despite the tale she told regarding Lydia. Your saying that it gets better give me an impetus to pick it up again and give it a few more chapters before declaring it DNF,

I see... wow I think I completely glossed over the whole aspect of danger in that scene. All I could fathom was the emotional impact

It wasn't just the danger she put others into, it was also the selfish [and reckless] disdain for other's feelings (to quote Lizzy from an alternate universe) all because she was chasing a high. Poor Kitty. And she just laughs at her, Callous.Immature. And potentially the horror/gore the poor sods who would have come upon the literal bloody mess she came within a hair's width of causing.

Oddly, Lydia has learned a hard lesson and her behavior is much improved.
