Hi everyone! Just wanted to get the log started, and then I’m handing the reins over to your team captain, the wonderful nat!! I wanted to reiterate that we need to be respectful and kind, and HAVE FUN here!! Prompts will be posted in the days leading up to the challenge, but while we’re waiting please introduce yourselves to your teammates who might not know you!

Here is the full member list:
- nat
- pickingdaisys(hiatus)(1024 points)
- Imani (ⒾⓂⒶⓃⒾ ✧)
- Maryam (hiatus)
- ilu (illuusioita)
- ✧ allie ✧
- celi
- elsa
- kayla (Ms sugar pink)
- Asia ♡ (320 points)
- Ria ✧.* (2572 points)
- lilly (668 points)
- aleksia
- vali (513 points)

Here are some reminders on rules and the point system:

❄️START/END DATES
As the majority of you voted for a 3-4 week challenge, this challenge will last from December 1st, 2024 to January 1st, 2025, to usher in the new year! You can start logging books as soon as November 30th and ALL BOOKS must be logged by the night of the 1st, otherwise those points will not be counted.

❄️RULES

🎅 As stated above, all books MUST be logged between the aforementioned start and end dates to count for points. You may start logging books the day before the challenge starts (it starts December 1st)

🎅 The LAST DAY to sign up will be December 5th. If you sign up after that date, you will NOT be able to participate. If you attempt to log books, we will NOT count your logs.

🎅 DNFs, comics and graphic novels, and stories under 100 pages WILL NOT BE COUNTED. If you read fanfiction, the story must have 10+ chapters and be ON GOODREADS. If you want more information please send me a message and said info will be provided.
╰┈➤ examples of fanfics on goodreads that you can use: Manacled, Secrets and Masks, The Disappearance of Draco Malfoy.
Note: please ignore how these are all dramione fanfics. Flame me if you will, but humns and almas get it and that’s all that matters

🎅 There IS a point system that needs following for this challenge. If you write a personal review outside of logging the books, please link it so you can get the points! Please also specify in the review that it is counted towards the “warm drinks and holiday cheer” reading challenge so we know it’s for the right book! Additionally, writing prompts and said personal reviews, written in the log or otherwise, MUST be 50+ words to get full credit. If you have any questions relating to this AFTER reading the rest of this message, please do not hesitate to ask!

🎅 Audiobooks WILL count for this challenge, but you need to log the physical copy to get the full amount of points.

🎅 Last time, we had a slight issue with the halloween bonus points. I want to make it clear: PLEASE log your books AS SOON AS YOU CAN. It’s less fair if everyone is logging books on the holidays and getting bonus points for it. So again, please don’t wait until a holiday to log your books, just do it as soon as you can! This also makes it easier for you so that your books to log don’t pile up.

❄️HOW TO GET POINTS

☃️ You can get points for the # of pages a book has, how many stars you rated that book, prompts, and bonus points. ALL prompts are unlimited with the exception of a few (and ofc ONE TIME BONUS POINTS)

☃️ # of Pages:
100-200 (+2 points)
201-300 (+4 points)
301-400 (+6 points)
401-500 (+8 points)
501+ (+10 points)
700+ (+12 points)

☃️ star rating:
1 star (+1 point)
2 stars (+2 points)
3 stars (+3 points)
4 stars (+4 points)
5 stars (+5 points)

☃️ If your decimal for the rating is under 0.5 PLEASE ROUND DOWN; if your decimal for the rating is 0.5 or OVER, PLEASE ROUND UP

☃️ RAB (Read A Book) prompts are (+7 each). Activity prompts are (+6) each. Writing prompts are (+9) each. If you write a personal review, that is (+8). Again: writing prompts and personal reviews MUST be 50+ words for the full amount of points.

☃️Buddy reads are (+7)

☃️BOTM is (+10)

☃️Bonus Points ONE TIME if your birthday is in DECEMBER or JANUARY. (+12) Bonus Bonus points if it’s on a holiday that occurs during the challenge! (12+5)

☃️Bonus Points if you log a book on the following holidays:
Christmas Eve
Christmas
New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Day
Kwanzaa
Hanukkah
IF YOU CELEBRATE A DIFFERENT HOLIDAY IN DECEMBER THAT IS NOT LISTED, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW I WANT YOU TO GET POINTS FOR THAT

I hope everyone has SO MUCH FUN during this challenge. Feel free to pm nat/me or comment here if you have questions, but reference the overall sign up to see if your question has already been asked/answered! Good luck!

allison m. ♡ | 18 comments also, i have one question. can multiple RAB prompts apply to one book? so say i read a romance book that had a white cover, would i get double points since a romance and white cover are both on the prompt list?

another thing i needed to tell you guys, my birthday is december 23rd so idk if we get extra points or anything. i thought i saw someone mention it in the sign up page.

🎁who was my fav character and why? (+9)
I really liked Hazal’s Aunt, Semra. She was very special to the family, since she was the only one who went to college and “actually got a decent job”. But the role she played in Hazal’s life was way more: she helped her, took care of her, listen to her and understood her and gave her advice.
It really bugged me that at the end of the book Hazal turned her back on her, even though she tried to help her and was worried about her.

2.5 ⭐

i'm so disappointed 😭

the first two books in this series i absolutely LOVE so i hate that this was such a let down to me.

i think my main issue was that i didn't feel the characters connection romantically and the “teach me” trope is not for me. i definitely still liked hayden he was super sweet but the author also told us next to nothing about him.

🎁 who was your favorite character? Why?
My baby daddy Grim, he was so sweet in this book, he took care of her and was so understanding even when she was such a crybaby and too stubborn for her own good. He was everything ands he deserves so much better, I love him so much.

🎁 who was your least favorite character? Why?
Islaa, she was soooo annoying and controlling, she was constantly lusting after both of them and couldn’t make up her mind despite literally being married to Grim, when she went with pro to the cave she literally BEGGED him to touch her and it was so digesting, leave my men alone and fuck off

🎁 what would you change about the book? Why?
I think for a series the love triangle has gone on for way too long, its so obvious she’s staying with grim so its frankly exhausting, there seriously was no need for oro to still be a romantic interest, he can go home for all I care, give em grim as a father

this book was definitely a miss, i was entertained enough to keep reading it but i don't think psychological thrillers are for me as there very predictable.

the plot twist didn't surprise me either which was very disappointing. i'll still be trying some more of freida's books as there very hit or miss

Writing prompts (+36):
🎁 who was your favorite character? Why?
Leo was definitely my favorite character. I always love the comedic relief characters, and Leo was no exception. He is a very funny and kind character. I also like that he has a lot of depth to him even though he has such a humorous personality and how he has gone through a lot of losses in his life but he's still able to stay strong and bounce back.

🎁 what character would you most like to shop for for the holiday season? Why?
I would definitely love to buy things for Piper since she has a lot of the same tastes as me. She would be an easier but also fun person to buy gifts for. It would also be really fun to go holiday shopping with her since she seems like she would be very excited to go shopping for herself and her friends.

🎁 what would you change about the
book? Why?
I don't have many complaints for the book and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, but I would have maybe made the book a little bit shorter. Since this is the first book in the series I feel like it didn't need to be so long but at the same time I enjoyed all the plot points of the story.

🎁 would you gift this book to a friend for
the holidays? Why or why not?
I would probably gift it to one of my friends that has finished the Percy Jackson series. I think it was a very fun and easy book that has a good set up for the series so I think many of my friends would enjoy this book the same way I did.

🎁 who was your favorite character?
Why?
My favorite character was Luke because he was such a kind and lovable character, and I really admired his sunshine personality. Even with the many challenges and personal struggles that he was dealing with, he always managed to power through them and keep a smile on his face, spreading positivity to those around him specially Catalina.

🎁what character would you most like to
build a snowman with? Why?

Probably Gaby and Luke, because their personalities seem to be a lot like mine, and I feel like we’d really click. I imagine we’d share similar interests, have fun conversations, and enjoy spending time together. We would probably get along really well and building a snowman together would be a good memory for all of us.

🎁what character would you most like to shop for for the holiday season? Why?

Catalina and Luke would be the best ones to shop for since they both love Lego. As someone that also enjoys building Legos, I would probably buy them a set that they don’t have yet so that they could both build and bond over together. I also think they would really enjoy the thought of buying them something that they can work together on.

🎁would you gift this book to a friend for the holidays? Why or why not?

I would definitely gift this book to a friend. I have a couple of friends that probably enjoy it a lot and some that would like that it’s a light and easy read. The book was overall very cute and sweet without being long or dragging out. It is the perfect holiday book to gift someone that enjoys romcoms and hallmark movies.

Writing prompts (+36):
🎁 who was your favorite character? Why?
My favorite character was Kei because even with her heart condition and not being able to do a lot of things that normal people can do she was still able to enjoy life to its fullest. She was a really strong character and I really loved the ending were she was able to meet with her future daughter.

🎁 what would you change about the book? Why?
I would probably change the pacing of the book since to me it was a little too slow. I understand that it is supposed to be a calm, relaxing, and comfort read but I just needed a little bit more to be happening in the story. Also, I wish the author would have made longer chapters for a couple of the characters since their story was really beautiful.

🎁 would you gift this book to a friend for the holidays? Why or why not?
Most of my friends enjoy fantasy, dystopian, or romance books, so I don’t think they’d like this one. I wouldn’t gift it to them since I didn’t really enjoy it myself. It’s hard to recommend something I didn’t personally find interesting and didn't connect with, and I doubt it would suit their tastes either.

🎁 what moment in the book would most likely happen to you? why?
Honestly, I think I would probably become just like the ghost in the book. I would probably get really caught up with seeing people form my past and end up forgetting to drink my coffee before it got cold and would become just like the lady in the dress, a ghost that that has its soul tied to the cafe forever.

🎁 who was your favorite character? Why?
My favorite character was definitely Piper, she was such a fun and nice character. Even when the main character was leading her on she was always trying her hardest to be nice and kind towards him. I loved her so much and I feel so bad about her family life (I'm glad that she has her grandma).

🎁 what was your favorite quote from the book? Why?
"You only get one life, Sarah. Don't waste it trying to live up to everyone else's ideas of who you should be." I really loved this quote because I feel like I sometimes try (as most people do) to conform myself to what people expect of me. I try to do things that will make my family and friends happy even though it doesn't make me happy so this quote really resonated with me in a deeper level.

🎁 would you gift this book to a friend for the holidays? Why or why not?
I would definitely gift this one of my friends since it was such a good, cute, and fast paced story. I really liked the character and the concept of "be careful of what you wish for" and I think that my friends would really like that as well. I also think they would really enjoy the romance!

🎁 who was your favorite character?
Why?
My favorite character was Evelyn because even though she always seemed so sure about what she was doing on the inside she was very worried about the future and very scared for what it holds for her while still wanting to get to said future soon. I also loved how strong and good of a female lead she was.

🎁what character would you most like to
spend a snowy day inside with? Why?
I would definitely spend a day inside with Bee. She is such a warm, kind, and nice character. I feel like she would make me feel very comfortable and make the day pass by really quickly with all her silly games and books. I bet she would also make us hot chocolates and put on hallmark movies for us to watch.

🎁would you gift this book to a friend for
the holidays? Why or why not?
I would definitely gift this book to any of my friends since I think they would love how fast paced and cute the story is. I think they would really appreciate a little christmas novella to get more into the christmas spirit. I also think they would love the romance specially because of the connection that the main characters have.

Writing prompts: 108

🎁 Who was your favorite character? Why?

Tiberius, for sure. Everyone else in the story was just so extra—either super dramatic, annoying, or downright frustrating. Tiberius wasn’t trying to start fights or act like the world was ending every five seconds, which made him stand out in the best way. He didn’t have to do anything amazing to win me over; just being calm and tolerable in the middle of all that chaos was enough. Honestly, when everyone else is exhausting, the one character who keeps it low-key feels like a breath of fresh air. Tiberius just had a vibe that was way easier to deal with.

🎁 Who was your least favorite character? Why?

Romeo, hands down. Romeo was definitely giving groomer vibes so him, he was also very annoying just tell me your a hormonal teen. He was so annoying with his constant whining and over-the-top emotions. One minute he’s crying over Rosalind, and then, two seconds later, he’s all about Juliet. It’s like, dude, take a second to chill. Also, the way he acted with Juliet felt super creepy like, you’re way older than her, and the whole thing was giving major red flags. Plus, he made the dumbest decisions ever, and every time he messed up, it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I honestly couldn’t stand him and kept wishing he’d just stop being so extra.

🎁 If you had to choose a holiday song to base a short story around, what would it be? Why?

Last Christmas cause my bro Romeo changed his mind every two days, how was he in love with Rosalind but two minutes later hopelessly infatuated with Juliet? He’s all “this is true love” one second and then completely forgets about it the next. Like, first, he’s obsessed with Rosalind, and then Juliet shows up, and he’s like, “Rosalind who?” The song totally captures the chaotic, flip-floppy energy of his love life. A short story based on it would be hilarious, especially if it showed how ridiculous and dramatic Romeo’s constant crushes were.

🎁 If you could choose any winter holiday for a novella to be centered around, what would it be? Why?

Christmas feels like the obvious choice because it’s such a big, festive holiday that already has plenty of drama built in. Families fighting, big parties, and way too much pressure it’s basically the Montagues and Capulets in a nutshell. You could set the whole story during a Christmas party where everything goes wrong, and it would still make sense. Plus, Christmas is so overdone that I’m sure someone’s already turned Romeo and Juliet into a cheesy holiday movie. It would be funny to see the tragic love story mashed up with Christmas cheer.

🎁 What was your favorite quote from the book? Why?

“Men’s love lies not in their heart but in their eyes.” This quote totally calls out how shallow Romeo’s so-called love really is. People act like this story is the ultimate romance, but it’s just a tale about two kids making dumb choices because they think they’re in love. The quote really highlights how Romeo is more about looks and surface-level feelings than anything real. It’s funny that people call this a love story when it’s more like a cautionary tale about not falling for someone just because they’re cute.

🎁 What character would you most like to build a snowman with? Why?

Paris, for sure. The guy didn’t do anything wrong, and yet he still got caught up in all the drama and died for no good reason. He seemed like a decent, chill guy who wouldn’t bring any chaos to a simple activity like building a snowman. Plus, he deserves some kind of break after getting dragged into the Montague-Capulet mess. Hanging out with Paris would probably be relaxing, and he’d actually be fun to talk to without all the drama.

🎁 What character would you most like to shop for for the holiday season? Why?

Juliet seems like the kind of person who would want something super fancy or dramatic, which would make shopping for her kind of fun. You’d have to go all out and pick something unique, which would be a challenge, but at least it wouldn’t be boring. She’d probably have a big reaction to whatever gift she got—whether she loved it or hated it—and that kind of energy would make the whole thing worth it.

🎁 What character would you most like to spend a snowy day inside with? Why?

The priest would be my pick. He was so calm and unbothered by everyone
else’s drama, which is exactly the kind of energy you want when you’re snowed in. He seems like he’d just chill with a book or tell you random stories without getting too worked up about anything. Hanging out with him would be super low-stress, and he probably wouldn’t care if you spent half the day napping or drinking hot chocolate.

🎁 What would you change about the book? Why?

I’d have Juliet marry Paris instead of Romeo because Paris actually seemed like a nice, stable guy. Meanwhile, Romeo could go off during his exile and maybe figure out how to make better decisions. This change would fix so many of the problems in the story. Juliet wouldn’t have to deal with Romeo’s nonsense, and Paris could finally catch a break. Plus, maybe with more time apart, Romeo would realize that love is more than just impulsive feelings.

🎁 Would you gift this book to a friend for the holidays? Why or why not?

No way. I didn’t enjoy this book, so I wouldn’t force a friend to read it. It’s supposed to be this great love story, but it’s really just a lot of bad choices and people dying for no reason. There are way better books out there that are more fun to read and don’t leave you frustrated. This was NOT the best romance story of all times I don’t know what you all are on to this sucked ass.

🎁 What character would you most like to vibe to holiday music with? Why?

Juliet seems like she’d be fun to listen to holiday music with because she’s so dramatic. I feel like she’d have really strong opinions about every song, which would make it hilarious. She’d probably cry over the sad ones and complain about the cheesy ones, but at least it’d be entertaining. I’m the biggest crier and we’d have a blast.

🎁 What moment in the book would most likely happen to you? Why?

When she stabs herself with a spear LOL. The part where Juliet stabs herself feels weirdly relatable not in a literal way, obviously, but in how she gets so overwhelmed that she just wants everything to stop. Life can be a lot sometimes, and even though her reaction was extreme, I kind of get how it feels to hit a breaking point where nothing makes sense anymore.

🎁 Who was your favorite character? Why?
Esther’s mom was my favorite because she reminded me so much of my own mom. She was so tired and constantly worried, just trying her best even though she didn’t really know how to help Esther. Her concern and exhaustion felt so real, and I couldn’t help but picture my mom in her place. It’s like, you could tell she loved Esther deeply, even if she didn’t always understand her. That mix of love and frustration made her feel like such a relatable character.

🎁 Who was your least favorite character? Why?
Doctor Gordon, for sure. He was so weird and off-putting with his approach to therapy, especially the shock treatments. It was like he didn’t even see Esther as a person, just some patient to experiment on. The way he handled her care was so cold and clinical, and it left such a bad taste in my mouth. He had this weird vibe, like he thought he was doing her a favor, but really, he just made everything worse. It was hard to read his parts without feeling frustrated.

🎁 If you had to choose a holiday song to base a short story around, what would it be? Why?
"Cardigan" by Taylor Swift fits so well. The book is so deeply sad and introspective, and the song has that same melancholic vibe. It’s all about feeling lost, out of place, and trying to hold onto something meaningful. A short story based on it could dive into Esther’s feelings of being stuck and not knowing where she belongs. The song’s mood just matches the emotional heaviness of the book perfectly.

🎁 If you could choose any winter holiday for a novella to be centered around, what would it be? Why?
Christmas, but in a super ironic way. Esther’s not Catholic, so it would highlight the disconnect between the festive, cheerful vibes of the season and her own struggles. It would be such a stark contrast to her inner turmoil, like the whole world is celebrating while she feels completely out of sync. The holiday setting could add this layer of bittersweet irony that fits the tone of the book so well.

🎁 What was your favorite quote from the book? Why?
The fig tree analogy was everything to me. It’s about being stuck in indecision and fearing that every choice you make means giving up something else. That line about starving under the tree because you can’t choose feels so personal it’s exactly how I feel about life sometimes. It’s so hard to commit to one path when there are so many possibilities, and the thought of losing out on the others is terrifying. I think about that quote constantly because it’s just so relatable and captures the paralysis of overthinking perfectly.

🎁 What would you change about the book? Why?
The ending felt really unsatisfying to me. It just didn’t give enough closure after all the emotional buildup throughout the story. I wanted to know more about where Esther’s journey would take her or see a stronger resolution to her struggles. It kind of left me hanging, which was frustrating after being so deeply invested in her story. A more solid ending could’ve tied everything together in a way that felt more fulfilling.

🎁 Would you gift this book to a friend for the holidays? Why or why not?
Yes, I totally would. It’s such a powerful and thought-provoking book, and even though it’s heavy, it’s also incredibly meaningful. I feel like everyone can find something in it to connect to, whether it’s the fig tree analogy or Esther’s struggle with societal expectations. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you long after you’ve finished it, so I’d definitely gift it to someone who appreciates deep, emotional stories.

🎁 What character would you most like to vibe to holiday music with? Why?
The rich woman (Philomena Guinea) seems like she’d be fun to hang out with. She’s got this air of sophistication and probably has good taste in music. I could imagine her putting on some fancy, jazzy holiday tunes while sipping hot cocoa in a beautifully decorated house. She’d probably have some interesting stories to share, too, which would make for an entertaining time.

🎁 What moment in the book would most likely happen to you? Why?
Honestly, the part where Esther becomes depressed feels the most relatable. Not to the same extreme, but I get what it’s like to feel stuck and overwhelmed by life. That sense of everything being too much and not knowing how to move forward it’s something a lot of people go through, and it really hit home for me. Esther’s journey captures that struggle in such a raw and honest way, which made it easy to see myself in her.

🎁 who was your favorite character? Why?
The Angel is by far my favorite character. The Angel is the soul of this play, and without her, the direction and motivation behind this piece would be lost. The Angel was especially important in part one, Millenium Approaches, and it was a pleasure to have the role expanded upon and explained in this second installment to the play. The Angel also provides some necessary humor (like through the meticulous coughs during speeches) while remaining an elusive and mysterious presence.

🎁 would you gift this book to a friend for the holidays? Why or why not?
I would not gift this book to a friend for the holidays. The subject matter is so dense and dark, and gifting only the second part of a play that is best consumed as a whole would not make much sense. I do have one friend who is currently studying this play, and she would be the only candidate for gifting. I also think that it does not align with the style of gifts I lean towards when choosing them for friends.
