This seventh book in A Series of Unfortunate Events finds the three Beaudelaire siblings in a new environment – this time an entire village becomes their “guardian” (as a nod to the concept that “it takes a village to raise a child.”) This town is truly vile. It is a scary place where a possible punishment for violating one of the many, many rules is burning at the stake. The only positive seems to be Hector the Handyman. Fortunately, Hector is hosting the children. He prepares their meals and recipes play a role in the story. The siblings are still on a quest to find the two remaining Quagmire triplets. The storyline provides clues to their whereabouts, which serve as an age-appropriate puzzle for young readers. It veers away (a bit) from the formulaic approach used in the previous books. I am enjoying the audiobooks, which are beautifully voiced by Tim Curry.
