🏆 *Updated* Scoring System

1. Page Points
0.01 points per page (with rounding)
100 to 149 pgs = 1pt
150 to 249 pgs = 2pts
and so on…

2. Task Completion
10 points for each monthly theme task completed
Maximum of 100 points per month (10 tasks x 10 points)

3. Bonus Genre
Additional 5 points if the task is completed with a book from the monthly bonus genre

4. Reviews and Summaries
5 points for each book review or summary submitted
Reviews must be at least 200 words to qualify

5. Discussions
5 points for active participation in each book discussion
Discussions must be held in the Buddy Read folder with a mod-approved thread

6. Team Reading Challenge
2 bonus points per book if the entire team reads the same book in a month

7. Diversity Reading Bonus
5 bonus points for reading a book by an author from an underrepresented group or a book translated from another language

8. Monthly Milestone Bonus
50 points if the team completes at least 80% of their monthly reading goals

9. Quarterly Milestone Bonuses
25 points if the team maintains an 80% or higher completion rate of their reading goals for the entire quarter

10. Team Balancing Bonus
To recognize teams that exceed their expected reading totals based on their combined maximum capacities, there is a Team Balancing Bonus. This bonus rewards teams for pushing beyond their limits while maintaining individual reading caps:

5% over Expected Total: 50 bonus points
10% over Expected Total: 100 bonus points
15% over Expected Total: 150 bonus points
20% or more over Expected Total: 200 bonus points

Example: If your team has a combined capacity of 36 books but reads 40 books in a month (11.11% over), your team will earn 100 bonus points.

11. Team Improvement Bonus
To encourage consistent growth and effort, there is a Team Improvement Bonus:
If your team increases its total books read compared to the previous month, you’ll earn an additional 30 bonus points. This bonus applies every month, rewarding teams for striving to improve regardless of their starting point.

Example: If your team read 29 books in Month 1 and increases to 35 books in Month 2, you’ll earn this bonus.

12. Adaptive Scoring System
To level the playing field further, there is an Adaptive Scoring System based on each team’s total monthly reading capacity:

Tier 1 (41-50 books): No multiplier
Tier 2 (31-40 books): 1.1x multiplier
Tier 3 (21-30 books): 1.2x multiplier

All points earned by the team (including bonuses) will be multiplied by this factor at the end of each month. However, if your team exceeds its tier’s capacity (e.g., a Tier 3 team with a capacity of 28 books reads into Tier 1 territory by completing 45 books), the multiplier will no longer apply. This adjustment ensures fairness as teams progress into higher tiers.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 291 comments Hey all. So nice to see you all here. Looking forward to it. I have tons of audiobooks just itching to be listened to

message 8: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments Waves! Hey everyone. I'm ready to start the new year off with completing some of my 24 challenges and not getting behind on my 25 ones. I'm on the waitlist already for the January BOM.

message 9: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 1421 comments Lol good luck, Anna!

message 10: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments We got this! Also, it looks like we get bonus points if the entire team reads the same book in a month. Should we all pick a book to read? I know I'm doing the BOM but we could pick a second book that we all read for more points. I haven't went to see what the BOM's are in other lands just yet.

message 11: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1532 comments bamaace83 wrote: "Should we all pick a book to read?"

I'm up for picking a monthly team book to read :)

I've also got a bunch of books in my TBR that will help with points for #7, and will try to get more consistent about doing book reviews.

I love the different aspects of this challenge.

message 12: by Trisha (last edited Dec 10, 2024 10:39AM) (new)

Trisha | 1509 comments Oh, sure, I'm up for trying to find a book we'd all read!

For BOM, I've read one of the BOM so probably won't be jumping in for January but I'll keep an eye on them as they pop up and try to get us additional points by reading them!

This year I'm really looking to get my past due Netgalley books done - 2023 and 2024 - and keep up on my 2025 so hopefully I can inject a bunch of them each month into our tasks! 🤞🏼🤞🏼

message 13: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments Ohhh, we have tasks. I just looked at the spreadsheet. Are we capped at 10 books? I think I'm going to need to use some strategy which I'm not good at.

Hi Team! Your spreadsheet has been updated with the new scoring and bonus points.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 15: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1532 comments I have a few books I know I'm going to try to read in January - do any of these appeal to anyone to do as a Team (or partial team) Buddy Read?

Rules of Civility
Master and Commander
Siddhartha (translated bonus)
Cloud Atlas

message 16: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I can do the Siddhartha book. With the bonuses, that will end up being worth a good bit of extra points. It's not my typical book and will push me outside my comfort reading.

message 17: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I just saw the book review points. I never write reviews. I just don't have the mental time and capacity to do that on most days. This could be a big problem for me and I'll probably cost us points but hopefully I can make them up in other places?

message 18: by Vicki (last edited Dec 25, 2024 04:39PM) (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 1421 comments Hello everyone. I can't believe there are so many messages here that I wasn't notified of and the notification box was checked. Ugh...anyway, I know how Anna feels about reviews. At times, has prevented me from adding points too. But the good news is, it doesn't really lose us points if you/I/any of us can't get to a review because it appears that it's just extra points if we do write one.

I'm down to buddy read or group read books as well, but I need to look over the books you listed, Teddie and also I'll look at the BOM to see if I already read it, etc. I HOPE I start getting my notifications. It's so annoying!

message 19: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 1421 comments Teddie, I will read Rules of Civility with you. I already got it from Libby so anytime. I'm no available these dates:

Jan 2, Jan 3
Jan 5-6
Jan 8-9
Jan 11
Jan15
Jan18
Jan 20-23

message 20: by Trisha (new)

Trisha | 1509 comments I've tentatively thrown some books in my spot on the spreadsheet that I plan to read in January. I'll keep an eye on the thread to see if I'm able to jump in on any buddy reads and what not!

I'm ready for January!

message 21: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments Okay, I'm going to switch to the Rules of Civility book too for the book read with Teddie and Vicki. It covers that NYE's task which is going to be more difficult to find. Just let me know when y'all are going to pick it up. :)

message 22: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments Where are y'all going to put The Last House Guest on this fancy spreadsheet?

message 23: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1532 comments Happy Holidays everyone! I haven't read a lot in the past week, but that will change starting today - the 26th is stay in pjs and read all day day :)

Looking forward to reading Rules of Civility with you guys! I have the book so Anna, why don't you pick from Vicki's dates?
Jan 2, Jan 3
Jan 5-6
Jan 8-9
Jan 11
Jan15
Jan18
Jan 20-23

I'm planning to put The Last House Guest against the "overcoming a major life challenge" task. I'll enter my current plans on our sheet - still have a few open. What are you all using for the resolutions task?

message 24: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I think those are the days she's no available but I'll wait for clarification. Let's say 12-14 if that works for her because that's a weekend. It's easier for me to read on the weekends usually.

message 25: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments Trisha listed One Day in December and I haven't read that one so I thought I might read it for new years resolutions.

message 26: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1532 comments You're right re: dates - read that wrong. I like starting on Jan 12th - works for me too.

We do get an extra 2 pts per book if we all read the same book in a month - is everyone planning on reading BOM The Last House Guest in Jan? Or Trisha & Jenny: want to read Rules of Civility in Jan? Or maybe One Day in December - that hits the Contemporary MPG too :)

message 27: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments Bonus points are very helpful. I tried to find books with the Contemporary tag. I still have a couple books to look for. I'm also trying to maximize my books for other challenges which is challenging.

message 28: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 1421 comments Good morning, ladies. Yesterday was quite a full day for us and I was in the middle of adding books to the spreadsheet, but we had to leave so I will look at the books that everybody has listed so far and see what I can add. The 12th works for me for civility. But whenever I read it, it says we just need to read the same book in the same month so I don’t even know that we have to read it at the same time. We can get clarification on that and it might make it easier for us to read some of the same books.

message 29: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1532 comments I missed that Contemporary MPG tag until today, so I may swap a couple books around. (Feb is Romance, March is Mystery)

I'm also doing a couple sci fi challenges so I agree with you re finding just the right books for the challenges. Because I'm doing a bunch of challenges that have monthly extras, I added a tab to my GR sheet that shows when I've tagged a book to be read in a particular month - we'll see how that goes as the year moves on :D

message 30: by Teddie (last edited Dec 26, 2024 08:27AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1532 comments @Vicki - if we want the team bonus, we all need to read the same book in the same month - no specific dates or discussion needed. We can also get bonus points for an Informal Buddy Read - I signed up for one for Civility - anyone who wants to join that, can :)

message 31: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I may need to upgrade to spreadsheet tracking. I use a notebook but I have so many challenges with connections this time.

message 32: by Trisha (new)

Trisha | 1509 comments Unfortunately, I've already read Rules of Civility by Amor Towles & The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda but I'd love to buddy One Day in December by Josie Silver .

Do we do a buddy read thread here? I'm open to dates, just let me know when works for you!

message 33: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I think we go request a post on the buddy read thread. Let me go see about how to do that.

Me too and it's free on KU! That's going to be fun reading this one with you two and possibly Teddie and/or Anna.

Hubby is off again today and we're researching and going to various places trying to find a new laptop for me for when we travel. I think I'm going to go with the Macbook Air. The Pro is WAY nice but it has too many features I'd be paying for but never use. If anyone has any input...feel free! It would be my first Mac. I've mostly had a DELL or Hewlett Packard.

We're getting ready to head out again so I'll be back this evening.

message 44: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I've been using a Mac since 2011. I had a Pro first and now I have an Air. I love mine. I use apple products so I love that everything is connected to each other. I do have office on mine and a few other things that I can utilize for work. I tend to use chrome over safari but I do that on my phone also. It probably will take some time getting used to the format of a Mac but if you've ever used an iphone or ipad, it won't be bad. What did you decide on getting?

message 45: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1898 comments I can read the Not What She Seems book too.

message 46: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 1421 comments For some reason, even though I have checked the notification box, I'm not getting it for this thread. Grr...

Anna, I decided on the Mac Air 15 in the Starlight color. It's going to be here on Thursday, Jan. 2 and I'm really excited!

Thanks! I just hope I can figure it out. lol It arrives tomorrow but tomorrow we also are going for our interview for our 5 year TSA preflight passes. Fingers crossed it arrives at some time when we're home. Freaking porch pirates! So far it's never happened to us.
