Would this fit the Pirate theme for the yearly challenge do you think? I have access to the audiobook
The second half of January could work. I will be gone the first week in February, so could start after the 9th.

OK, no worries. I might still join in anyway as it sounds interesting
I'm planning my January reads, and will fit The Wager in starting around Jan 20 if that works for everyone else.
I’ve started this. The preface definitely peaked my interest. The first chapter is a bit slow going which is to be expected as it’s setting the scene.(view spoiler)
Grann mentions the Royal Hospital in Chelsea and the Chelsea pensioners. The hospital and the pensioners still exist today. The Chelsea Pensioners and their uniforms are pretty famous in London.

That sounds intriguing Lori. I'll have a bit of research to do once I get started. It will likely be Tuesday for me since I have about 2 hours left in my current audiobook. But, do continue Lori, we'll be with you in no time.
That was fascinating reading, Lori. Henry receives a "pension" since he retired from the military. I just informed him about the meaning of the word and now he wants to take my book and read it. I told him to "stand in line soldier".
Yes, Henry is my hubby. He is retired navy. I won't be able to get to the book until tomorrow. I have a little bit more to read in my current book, but will finish tonight.
I plan to start today at bedtime. I am so tired I'm not sure how much I will read, but I'm really looking forward to it.

This is my 4th book by David Grann. I’ve enjoyed them all so far. His books are full of information but still easy to read.Chapters 2&3

I agree, (view spoiler)
I'm at the beginning of chapter 4. The chapters are quite long. I don't like to stop mid chapter, but there's something like a half hour left in this one.(view spoiler)

It really was a horrible practice [spoilers removed]"
It's really interesting to hear Henry's point of view. Having been in the navy, he can have an insider's view so to speak.

I also like that we are learning the history behind (view spoiler)
Jayme wrote: "I also like that we are learning the history behind (view spoiler)"That is really interesting. I love to know the origin of popular sayings.
I am listening to this on Audio and have really only just managed the first few pages but I loved this quote "we emerge as heroes of our stories so that we can live with what we have done"
I finished the book and found it fascinating. The last half went very fast. I found it interesting (view spoiler)
I have just finished Chapter 2 - I was also amazed at how they got the men for their crew. (view spoiler)
I'm resuming this one today. I'm only in chapter 1! I was planning to start last Tuesday but life got really crazy. It seems my husband has arthritis in his neck, which is not great of course, but it took many days to know what was going on. He woke up one morning in acute pain in his right shoulder and arm. After a couple of hours his hand started to get numb and weak. If it had been his left one I would have call 911 thinking he was having a heart attack. On top of everything he had fever (unrelated, just a cold) but this didn't help to know what was going on. We were scared, really. Now everything is almost back to normal. Of course he is still in pain (better controlled now), but compared with everything we imagined during the days it took to have a diagnose it is nothing. And compared to being in a shipwreck is also nothing! So back to my book. :)

Take however long you need to read the book.
