I swear we will actually use the right thread this year! New year, any plans or resolutions anyone?

message 2: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1811 comments Haha, let's see how it goes. I had extremely busy 3 months and finally have some time to review/think of the books I've finished, plan something for this year. Apart from reading I also need to learn some things related to AI development. I wasn't learning much of CS recently as I mostly concentrated on learning German. Now it's at the level, when I can just consume content and occasionally go through some grammar. So the plan is to dedicate all the free time to learning the tech things I missed.

What about you guys?

message 3: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1089 comments Not much here. On the reading front I'm kind of pivoting into more light novels this year after a year of heavy manga reading. On the IRL front it's just more of the same. Work could be kind of interesting as we pivot into new stuff and more electric stuff. In particular more high voltage electric stuff.

message 4: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6720 comments Mod
That is awesome that you have gotten your German to that level Elena! Love that you are always learning.

For me, book wise more of the same but hopefully Ill read some more of what I own. Job wise sadly more of the same also as it doesn't look like anything will open up where I want to be anytime soon with the hospital being massively over budget.

Elena that is amazing! I've been learning Japanese on and off for years and still can't consume content without subtitles 😂 To be fair, I'm not very consistent lol. Maybe I should re-focus on that this year. We'll see.

message 6: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1869 comments My main aim of the year is trying to find a new job which is easier said than done but I've been at my current job for two years now and I'm very done with it, so yeah my main goal is trying to find something new that is more related to what I actually want to do. I'd also just really like to read more this year, my reading numbers have been slipping year on year and whilst I know it's more about quality than quantity, I'd really like to end this year with a higher final reading challenge number than last year!

Yeah, I totally get it. And it's pretty tough to keep learning. Maybe it helps, actually it took me about 3-ish months to really boost my German comprehension, but it was a very intense study process, 2-3 hours per workdays and 5-8 hours per days off. I know that it sounds extreme but it really helped to gain some confidence and to get through the plato.

message 9: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1811 comments @Brittany, yeah, been there at some point, when seems like everything is ok, but not good enough, and you really want something better.

@Jo, I hope you get the job you want this year!

Thanks! Have my follow up appointment on Tuesday thankfully!

Have a coworker talking shit about my not being at work so that was super fun. Thought they were my friend, turns out I was wrong.

Got in right for my specialist appointment right away. Dr is great. Just following up with his boss. I'll be off at least 2 more weeks. He said 3-4 I tried for less. Likely a cyst. Could be a benign kind of tumor growth. There's options after it heals to think about.
Thinking it's a non aggressive bony lesion such as an aneurysmal bone cyst

So Dr Ross said 4 weeks then more X-rays. Follow up appointment march 11

I'll probably need the surgery in the future

Surgeries are never a fun option, but when they're needed, they're needed. I'm glad you at least have some answers now. And hopefully it'll be a speedy recovery.

So, I was seeing The Lion King Friday, show was delayed at first because of a technical issue. Started about 35 min late. Show started amazing, the costumes are something else. Then 20ish minutes into the show theres a stop. Few minutes later there's an announcement about a medical emergency. 10 minutes pass, lights come on, eventually they reopen the bars and food. After about an hour they cancel the show. So made us sad as my friend flew in for this.
Then there was the huge storm coming through and my friend was already getting notices on Friday that her Sunday night flight might be cancelled or delayed. We were going to drive back to London after the show but ended up staying near the airport for a couple days instead. She was able to change her flight to an early Sunday one for free and it did leave close to on time so yay. Thankful we stayed that way though. None of the highways were plowed and we got a significant amount of snow. My drive back from the airport to London took 3.5 hours, it should take 2. I couldn't drive faster than 70km/h down a highway that has a speed limit of 110 in parts.
Got back to London and got stuck in the roundabout by my place and then stuck getting into the driveway.

Seeing my friend was amazing and we had fun but sheesh what a weekend. We checked out a used bookstore I hadn't been to and ate so much food.

Elena Granger | 1811 comments A little bit weird topic, but... :D Recently I finally defined the 2 chores I like the least, so basically it's cleaning the shower and taking out the trash.

I wonder, what are yours?

Vacuuming. I hate it so much.

message 24: by Elena (new)

@Brittany interesting, I don't know many people who actually hate it.

Good news fracture in my finger is healed.

Bad news is surgery is being booked out 9-12 months. I'm on the cancellation list so who knows when I'll get in. They will call me. And until then I'm at high risk for rebreaking it. So no aerial of any form and I get to be careful with what I do in general. Back to work tomorrow though.

message 26: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1811 comments Hey Brittany, I'm glad it's healed, also hope you could get a surgery as early as possible. Be careful :)

I went to Rose City Romance, a new book convention yesterday. So fun. Met a bunch of authors I'd never heard of, bought 7 books. Just a good time! Sounds like it is going to become a yearly thing so that's exciting!

So I went to Mexico in August and that was great (lots of no internet time which was great for me tbh 😆 Did a bit of reading, played some Tiny Book Shop, it was great!) Then I came back and worked for a bit, was stressed like always, but I just got back from another trip to Portland, Oregon, and I thought you guys would appreciate the ridiculous book haul I got 😆 (Went to two different Powell's and a couple of Barnes and Nobles... we have but one local bookstore where I live 😢)

Carl's Doomsday Scenario (Dungeon Crawler Carl, #2) by Matt Dinniman The Court of the Dead (The Nico di Angelo Adventures #2) by Rick Riordan Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove Fortune's Kiss by Amber Clement The Sunbearer Trials (The Sunbearer Duology, #1) by Aiden Thomas The Night Stockers by Kristopher Triana The Spellshop (Spellshop, #1) by Sarah Beth Durst Calamity (Uncharted Hearts, #1) by Constance Fay Lotería Stories by Cynthia Pelayo Chaos at the Lazy Bones Bookshop (Halloween Bookshop Mystery, #1) by Emmeline Duncan Mayhem at a Halloween Wedding (Halloween Bookshop Mystery, #2) by Emmeline Duncan

Sooo 7 of these 11 books were bought at one Powell's, the main one that is 3 stories 🫣 I swear I blacked out in that store 😂 I was just adding books to my basket like no one's business. Lol. But my excuse is that I don't buy a lot of books because I use my library a lot, so it's okay (I keep telling myself 😆)

Powell's is the biggest new and used independent bookstore in the world, so if you guys are ever on the West Coast (possibly when our country isn't burning to the literal ground 😖) I highly recommend visiting it!

Glad you had good trips!!

I went to a little book market today. Bought a book by a local author that looks good. Always fun. They also have a take a book leave a book so I got rid of some and got some new ones! Always a bonus. A couple I have read but didn't own copies of. Then I was close to my fave used book store so I had to stop in there. Only bought 4!

message 39: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1811 comments @Brittany oh yeah, the Princess Donut T sound so appealing! :D There is some unique magic in buying books by local authors, especially in smaller towns with those little cozy bookshops. So idyllic!

@Lili I'm already falling in love with the series. From the first chapter. Maybe I'll catch up and dive into the second book soon too.

How did goodreads choice awards go for all of you?

I voted in:
Historical Fiction (read 1 and enjoyed it)
Romance (read 1 and have 4 more on my tbr)
Romantasy (havent voted as the only one I have read so far I didn't like. I think I have like 7 on my tbr)
Fantasy (also no vote yet. 6 on my tbr and I intend on getting to 2 of them very soon)
Horror (read 1, have to vote for Kelley Armstrong books)
YA fantasy ( read 2 loved them both but went for Rebel Witch, 9 more on tbr)
YA general (read 1 but it was only alright)

So I have read 7 total books on these lists..

message 41: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1869 comments I only voted in four categories, Historical Fiction, Mystery & Thriller, Fantasy and YA Fantasy and Sci-Fi as those were the only categories I had read any of the books in!

message 42: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1089 comments As usual I have not read a single thing on any of the lists. Just to be clear I have read several new releases but just nothing that would make lists like this.

message 43: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6720 comments Mod
I've read a lot of new releases this year so its always surprising to me when there are so few on these lists that I have read...

message 44: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1869 comments Yeah almost half the books I've read this year have been new releases and yet I think 2 made the nominee list? But hey what do I know!

message 45: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1811 comments Same, though I didn't read a lot of new releases this year, but it happens even when I do read mostly new releases. Voted in a couple of categories, for the books I really loved.

message 46: by Liliana, YA Paranormal Lover (new)

Liliana (lililostinabook) | 3012 comments Mod
I'm with Gord on this one. I have read nothing on the lists. Lol. I do have some of them on my tbr, though.

Also, am I the only one who thinks it's wild that there are THREE Freida McFadden books in one category? Two, fine. But three?? I mean, I get her books are popular, but wow.

message 47: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6720 comments Mod
Right?! Lets put some variety

message 48: by Liliana, YA Paranormal Lover (new)

Liliana (lililostinabook) | 3012 comments Mod
I understand that this choice awards thing is basically a popularity contest, but yes, variety would be nice. Sigh.

message 49: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1811 comments To be honest, with each new year I'm more and more disappointed with the selection.

message 50: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6720 comments Mod
Agreed! I will always wish they would bring back the write in option
