A little more research and I found out he had a stroke. He also had a history of brain cancer.

The Osmond Brothers was probably the first album I bought. Sad to see Wayne has passed away!

message 7: by Karin (last edited Jan 03, 2025 12:41PM) (new)

Karin | 840 comments The first album I ever bought was by the Osmond brothers because I was a huge fan of Donnie. The other boys seemed so old, but Donnie was born the same year as my now husband (too old for me when I was 11 and 12, of course, but young enough to have appeal.) I had pictures of Donnie Osmond all over my wall from the teen/ tween magazines in extant at that time from 11.5 until partway through the year I was 13. Then I did everything I could to stop the merciless teasing from my siblings that had started, plus I had moved onto other music and groups.

That makes sense since Donnie is younger than you are; I'm guessing you were listening to the Osmonds before he joined them. I loved "Sweet and Innocent" plus "Puppy Love." The first time I saw this video of him dancing in the background in front of a green screen while Weird Al is singing "White and Nerdy - Take 1" I laughed a lot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq6On... --it was fun to see his sense of humour.

Clint HIll, FBI agent who tried to shield President Kennedy at his assassination, has died at the age of 93. He spent the rest of his life wondering if he could have saved the president if he had acted quicker.

By coincidence I was reading his book, but it's kind of slow going so I've been putting it aside for quicker books I can read for challenges.

Back in the late 80's or early 90's, Val had an aunt that lived in the nursing home that I worked at. I always hoped he would come to visit but he never did. There were also two second or third cousins of his that worked there but they had never met him and said he never comes to the reunions.

Karin | 840 comments Val Kilmer? He might not have been close to his aunt and/or it might be that he had family who were all over him wanting money, etc. Who knows? He might not have been close to his extended family or the cousins weren't nice to him when he was a kid or many other things. It's not uncommon for people to make it big and then have problems with some relatives that turns them off. Or he could have been a jerk. I have no idea, but becoming that famous can make many things difficult.

My brother didn't ever have that problem even when he was making good money since we're not like that (well, perhaps one aunt) but he never got that famous, either (but was the face of one of a series over in Europe--he was a lead but not one of theh two stars.)

I'm guessing that if AJ Buckley were as famous when my brother got married as he was now he might have thought twice about being my brother's best man but he's never been at the level of Val Kilmer. His career was doing well, but not like it did later.

I think it was just that Val grew up in California and the relatives I knew were in Minnesota. I can see why he wouldn't go all the way to Minnesota to visit people he hardly knew or maybe didn't know at all. Still, I thought it was interesting that I know several distant cousins of his!

His Minnesota family published a family cookbook, which I purchased because I knew quite a few of the people in that family. There is a family tree in the book and his name IS in it!

Yes, I agree; I find those connections very interesting, and not just because one of my brothers became an actor. I was like that before then. It's a smaller world since modern transportation!

I don't think it was on one of the two channels we got until we moved to San Francisco for 2 years when I was 9 and don't remember if we watched it there or when we came back to "cable" (not cable TV, but gave us more network channels.) Perhaps we did, but I have no strong memories of it.

Still, it's sad to see people go, isn't it?

I definitely wouldn't like it now; I've never been a huge game show watcher, although of course I watched a few sometimes. One year a friend and I lined up to see if we could be in the audience for "Let's Make a Deal" when it was filming in MetroVan (the Regional District that includes Vancouver--BC has some unique breakdowns that aren't the same as counties--and I can't remember if it was North Vancouver or West Vancouver, which are separate cities.

We didn't get picked.

Hee Haw wasn't a game show. If you know the show Laugh-In it was like that, only with a country hillbilly style. So basically, just a lot of corny jokes and skits.

Right, I knew that but forgot! Laugh-In was funny when I was small, but I no longer find it funny so will pass on Hee Haw. Laugh-In didn't come over our 2 channels so I had thought it was a brand new show when we first saw it in San Francisco, but as an adult I learned it had started in 1967.
